Memory Loss Program in Burlington, VT
Memory loss can be a serious medical condition…or simply a recurring forgetfulness that affects many of us.
To help patients understand their memory condition, the Memory Program at the University of Vermont Medical Center provides evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of age-related memory disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, and management of the conditions that may produce these disorders.
Patients are evaluated by a multidisciplinary team, including a neuropsychologist, neuropsychometrist, and a physician. Family support and counseling is an integral part of the treatment plan. This service is supported by our Clinical Social Worker.
For more information on memory loss, visit our Health Library, a learning center which includes a symptom checker and interactive tools.
Memory Loss: What to Expect
During the initial evaluation, patients undergo neuropsychological testing, and may be scheduled for appropriate outpatient laboratory and radiological examinations.
During the second visit, a thorough medical history and physical exam are completed, and the results of the evaluation are discussed with the patient and family. A therapeutic plan is outlined if appropriate.
The patient is then followed at regular intervals by our Nurse Practitioners to monitor progress. Treatment is carefully coordinated with the Primary Care Physician. Family Members receive ongoing counseling, education and support for managing the care of the cognitively impaired relative. The patient may also receive supportive counseling for the management of their symptoms.
Family Members are encouraged to attend all appointments.
