University of Vermont Health is a rural academic health system with more than 100 years of service to small towns and cities across Vermont and northern New York. We are deeply committed to reimagining rural health in ways that will benefit our communities for generations to come and keep exceptional care close to home.
At the heart of our health system are our people — your friends, neighbors and family members. Together, they bring compassion, expertise and the humanity that runs deep in our communities to your care.
Our Mission: Healthier Communities. Healthiest Lives. Together.
Your health is our purpose. It’s at the center of everything we do. As a community of caregivers, we work together to provide the highest quality, trusted, compassionate and equitable care to more than 1 million people in our rural region.
We’re a connected system of local health care. Through our hospitals, outpatient clinics, specialized treatment locations, long-term care and home-based services, we bring people, expertise and technology together to care for people from birth through end of life.
Responding to the unique needs of our communities means going beyond traditional care to address the many factors shaping healthy lives — including safe housing, nutritious food, transportation, childcare, unemployment, substance use and mental health. We value our collaborations with local community and service agencies that help us serve as strong partners in addressing all of the dimensions of health.
Our health system is anchored by an academic medical center, which means we work in close partnership with The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine and the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at University of Vermont. This allows us to offer a range of medical specialties, advanced treatments and new therapies locally — so you don’t need to travel long distances beyond our service area for the care you need.
It also means hundreds of patients within and beyond our region benefit from new medical discoveries stemming from our research and clinical trials. All of this brings healing and hope.
Every day, we shape the future of health care by training the next generation of clinicians, many of whom stay and practice in our communities. Through academic partnerships with University of Vermont and other educational and training partnerships in our communities, we prepare people for meaningful work and help address the health care workforce shortage.
Introducing Golisano Children's Hospital at UVM Health
We are proud to announce a transformative $25 million commitment from philanthropist Tom Golisano — the largest donation in UVM Health’s history. This generous gift will significantly expand access to care and enhance services for children and families across the region.
A Connected System of Care
We strive to support each person’s ability to be as healthy as possible. Our focus is on continually improving your health care experience — making it easier for you to manage your health with digital tools like the MyChart patient portal and connecting your health information across our service locations through shared electronic health records, integrated clinical systems and advanced diagnostics.
More than 14,000 caring individuals provide or support the care you receive across our health system including 1,900 physicians and advanced practice providers. Many of our clinicians practice in multiple locations, expanding our ability to serve our communities and provide care when and where you need it.
As a “safety net” health system, we are committed to taking care of people who may have no other options for care and are without the means to afford to pay for their care.
University of Vermont Health includes:
- An academic medical center. University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont, anchors our health system. It provides the highest levels of specialized hospital care, serves as a regional referral center for people within and beyond our service area and is home to Vermont’s only Level 1 Trauma Care center.
- Two community hospitals. Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh, New York, and Central Vermont Medical Center in Barre, Vermont, serve our communities with a range of locally based care and services, including preventive, specialty and acute care across all stages of life.
- Three critical access hospitals. Porter Medical Center in Middlebury, Vermont; Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone, New York; and Elizabethtown Community Hospital in Elizabethtown, New York, help preserve access to emergency, primary and specialty services in these rural communities.
- A multispecialty medical group. University of Vermont Health Medical Group includes 1,300 physicians and 600 advanced practice providers, serving our communities across a wide range of specialties and clinical practice areas.
- A children’s hospital. Golisano Children's Hospital is a ‘hospital without walls’ that extends throughout our health system. It offers child-friendly approaches to wellness and provides lifesaving and life-altering care for children with serious illness, injury or medical conditions. Vermont’s only pediatric intensive care unit is located at University of Vermont Medical Center, with additional pediatric services offered through specialty centers, clinics and emergency departments across our region.
- 154 outpatient care sites. We offer primary and specialty care, advanced diagnostics, rehabilitation and state-of-the-art treatments in community-based settings.
- A cancer center. University of Vermont Cancer Center is Vermont’s only nonprofit clinical and research cancer center, which consists of four local treatment sites: UVM Cancer Treatment Center in Burlington, Vermont; National Life Cancer Treatment Center in Berlin, Vermont; Reddy Cancer Treatment Center in Malone, New York; and FitzPatrick Cancer Treatment Center in Plattsburgh, New York. The University of Vermont Cancer Center brings together the expertise of more than 250 research and clinical members to care for patients and advance cancer science.
- Continuing care. We support patients beyond the hospital setting through home health and hospice services, four skilled nursing facilities and other care and service options in Vermont and northern New York.
Our Vision: Reimagining Rural Health. Leading with Innovation. Transforming Lives.
People in rural areas like ours face unique barriers to care — long travel distances, fewer hospitals and caregivers, limited transportation and unreliable internet for virtual appointments. These challenges contribute to well-documented health disparities, including higher rates of diabetes, heart disease, obesity, mental illness and substance use.
Rural health systems also face growing pressures. Workforce shortages make it harder to recruit providers and other medical professionals, while financial pressures continue to threaten operations. Recent research shows that since 2010, more than 150 rural hospitals have closed, including 15 this year alone.
Reimagining rural health is essential to our future. We’re exploring new ways to make quality health care more affordable, rethinking how care is delivered across our rural region and innovating to find new ways to expand access to the services people need.
As a regional health partner, we work with other health care organizations and federally qualified health centers to collectively respond to the needs of our region. Within and across our communities, our collaborative work — from strengthening emergency transport and response systems to supporting community-based solutions for housing, childcare and mental health — reflects our commitment to better serve you. Expanding access through virtual visits is another example of how we’re constantly striving to meet your needs.
Here With You, For You
We work in partnership at the local, state, regional and national levels to see that rural communities get the attention and support they need. As one of the region’s largest employers and health systems, it’s our responsibility to advocate for policies and funding that reflect the needs of the people we serve — and we take action to make a real difference for our communities and our employees.
We’re working hard to solve some of health care’s biggest challenges by expanding access, making care more affordable and doing our part to see that everyone receives the high-quality care they deserve.
As a nonprofit, every dollar we earn beyond the cost of providing care goes back into what matters most: supporting the people who provide your care, securing programs that improve the care journey for patients and families, investing in state-of-the-art diagnostics and technology, upgrading facilities and strengthening our role as a dedicated and trusted source for care.
Every day, we’re inspired by the gratitude we receive — from heartfelt notes and kind words to charitable gifts made in honor of our staff. Each gift has an impact on our patients, our people and our work — sparking our determination to innovate, elevate and continuously improve.
Working Together for a Healthier Future
Five strategic priorities guide our work forward:

- Affordability: Do our part to address the rising cost of health care in our region by being effective stewards of our resources.
- Our People: Attract, retain and develop an engaged workforce representing a diversity of perspectives.
- Our System: Advance as a connected health system delivering care locally, working together to strengthen trust and build a shared culture that puts our patients first.
