Our physician-researchers build innovative approaches to care, make ground-breaking advancements in their fields and train the next generation of providers — all to bring leading-edge treatments to you as soon as safely possible.
Working Together to Advance Medicine and Quality of Care
University of Vermont Health is home to University of Vermont Medical Center, one of 138 academic medical centers in the country that provide patient care and educate future health care providers. As a rural academic health system, we are able to provide leading-edge care, informed by research and clinical trials, to patients throughout our region.
The foundation of these efforts lies in our longstanding alliance with the Larner College of Medicine and the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at University of Vermont. A top-100 public research university, University of Vermont awards more than $250 million in research funding each year, including up to $100 million toward clinical research.
Strong Partnerships
Our physicians and biomedical scientists bring hope to patients by advancing medical knowledge through research.
We're committed to researching, educating and innovating patient care to create a healthier and more equitable world.
We're helping improve our region's quality of life with innovations in medicine and health care that arise from new knowledge and discovery.
Research
Medical research often changes people’s lives for the better. Researchers at UVM Health play an integral role in that change, working to bring a greater understanding of disease, wellness and new, more effective treatments and care delivery through clinical trials and other research initiatives.
Our research takes place in laboratory, clinical and community settings, and focuses on many different areas of medicine, including cancer, cardiovascular medicine, neuroscience, vaccines, metabolic research and more.
This research is supported through our state-of-the-art facilities, including the Firestone Medical Research Building, and research funding from the Larner College of Medicine, which receives between $90 and $100 million in funding annually.
We offer residency and fellowship programs in a university-based setting that provides a well-rounded medical training experience at University of Vermont Medical Center and Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital.
Residents and fellows work closely with physician-researchers to advance their fields and gain critical on-the-job clinical experience.
Clinical Trials
University of Vermont Health is committed to advancing the field of medicine through our participation in research and clinical trials. This allows us to offer our patients access to treatments and innovations that are not widely available to improve care for patients in our communities, across the country and around the world.
In partnership with Larner College of Medicine, we are currently involved in more than 1,000 active research projects and 200 clinical trials in many specialty areas, including cardiology, pulmonology, emergency medicine, cancer, neurology and vaccine testing. All research opportunities that we offer to our patients have been approved by our Institutional Review Board, which demands the highest levels of ethical behavior, transparency and protection of patient safety and privacy.
Clinical trials are research studies involving patients, often focusing on a specific condition or patient population. They’re carefully designed to seek more effective treatments and new ways of preventing, screening for or diagnosing diseases.
Clinical trials are the fastest and safest way to find new treatments that work and improve health.
Before a new treatment is approved for general use in the United States, clinical research must be conducted to prove it is safe and effective.
There are several ways to find an active clinical trial. If you are a current patient, ask your doctor if there are any available research studies for your condition. They can tell you if you are eligible for any current clinical trials, explain the benefits and risks of participating, and help you enroll.
You can also visit ClinicalTrials.gov to find a list of active clinical trials. You can search for clinical trials in your area, or clinical trials focusing on a specific condition or treatment.
For a complete list of clinical trials being conducted at UVM Health, or to get more information about a specific clinical trial, please contact the Office of Clinical Trials research at 802-656-8990 or clinicaltrials@uvm.edu.
UVM Cancer Center supports more than 100 active clinical trials focused on prevention, screening, treatment, supportive care and survivorship.
