At University of Vermont Health - UVM Medical Center, we provide state-of-the-art, coordinated, timely treatment for all types of emergencies. As the only tertiary care Level 1 Trauma Center in Vermont, we have specialists in all major medical and surgical fields available to assist in emergency care when needed.
For non-emergent issues, in which patients would benefit from being seen by a physician or advanced practice provider, University of Vermont Medical Center Urgent Care has a convenient location in Colchester.
Our Facilities
- 45 beds, including 10 specifically designated for trauma and major resuscitation
- A separate pediatric emergency department affiliated with University of Vermont Children’s Hospital to provide children with specialized emergency care
- Enhanced imaging technology, including dedicated X-ray machines and an advanced Computed Tomography (CT) scanner
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) ultrasounds, available 24 hours a day
- Specialized areas and equipment dedicated to orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology, ear, nose and throat and psychiatry
- Five ambulance bays for local and regional transports
- A trauma elevator to take patients directly from the emergency room to operating rooms on the third floor
- An expanded decontamination area for situations involving hazardous materials
Our Services
Our emergency medicine team provides care for a full range of emergent conditions, including:
- Cardiac problems, including chest pain or trouble breathing
- Complications related to blood disorders, cancers or gastrointestinal disorders
- Coronary artery disease
- Mental health crises
- Stroke or other vascular diseases
- Traumatic injuries
- Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program (S.A.N.E.)
Your Visit
Things you need to know about our emergency department:
- Everyone receives treatment, regardless of ability to pay.
- All patients must register when they arrive with information such as name, address, family provider and insurance coverage.
- Treatment will not be delayed because of registration.
- If you are too ill to provide the needed information, a family member can help.
- Arriving with your medications or a list of your medications is very helpful to the staff.
- You or your family member must sign a consent form that allows staff to treat you and bill your insurance company.
- A triage nurse is responsible for evaluating your condition before you are seen by an emergency medicine provider.
- You will be seen and treated as soon as possible, depending on the seriousness of your situation.
- You have the right and responsibility to express any concerns you have to the nurse assigned to you.
For patient and staff safety, everyone entering the emergency department must pass through a security screening that includes a metal detector and bag scanner.
- You will need to check in at the main desk.
- Visitors are admitted at staff's discretion.
- Normally, two visitors can be with a patient at one time.
- Visitors must wear and display a badge at all times when in patient areas.

Insurance Accepted
The Emergency Department at University of Vermont Medical Center treats all patients without regard to their insurance coverage or ability to pay. If you have insurance, bring your insurance card with you and present it at registration in the Emergency Department.
Some insurance companies require a referral from the primary care provider to provide full coverage. Coverage may also be reduced or denied if your insurance company determines that your visit did not meet their criteria for an "emergency."
Please refer to your insurance policy so that you fully understand the coverage provisions for use of the emergency department.

The emergency department is closest to the Colchester Avenue entrance, but you can get to it from any University of Vermont Medical Center entrance by following the red signs. There is parking directly outside the emergency department. If a patient is transferred out of the emergency department and to another part of the medical center, please move your car to the underground visitor parking garage. It is located near the main entrance of the hospital. Directions: From the emergency room lot, go back down to the stop sign. Take a right and follow the road around the curve to the stop sign, where you will see the main entrance on your right. Take a left.
