X-Ray Imaging at UVM Health
X-ray imaging provides a quick method for looking inside your body to identify the source of pain or monitor an existing condition. We routinely use X-ray tests, or radiographs, to identify bone fractures and other bone issues, as well as to examine the lungs for a variety of conditions.
X-ray machines produce images by using a concentrated beam of radiation at a very low dose. The beam painlessly passes through your body tissue, organs and bones to take a precise picture of what might be causing your health problem to help guide your treatment.

Conditions We Diagnose with X-ray Imaging
The ability to examine many parts of your body makes X-ray an exceptionally useful diagnostic tool for a wide array of health concerns. Your provider may order an X-ray to diagnose:
- Bone conditions including fractures, arthritis and bone cancer
- Lung infections and lung cancer
- Problems in your digestive (or GI) tract
- Blood vessel health
- Signs of congestive heart failure, such as an enlarged heart
X-Ray Services
At UVM Health, we offer a variety of X-ray services for:
- Routine and emergency diagnostic exams
- Bone densitometry (bone density scans) to diagnose osteoporosis
- Fluoroscopy studies, including:
- Barium studies of the upper and lower GI tract
- Steroid injections
- Arthrograms
- Intra-operative exams for guiding surgical procedures
What to Expect From an X-ray Exam
Most routine X-ray exams do not require advance preparation. For some tests, you may need to swallow or be injected with a contrast agent to provide better detail of blood vessels, joint spaces and the organs of your digestive system. Some exams may involve not eating or drinking several hours beforehand. Others may require you to bring someone with you who can drive you home after the procedure.
You will be informed ahead of time if any special preparation is needed. Carefully follow any special instructions you receive from our radiology team prior to your X-ray.
Before starting your procedure, the technologist will explain the X-ray exam to you. To ensure optimal imaging results, our experienced team member will give you specific instructions about your breathing and body positioning during the X-ray.
If you are pregnant, think you are pregnant or there’s a chance you could be pregnant, please notify the technologist before your exam.
Requesting Your Images
Use the Radiology Image Record Request form to request your imaging records.
When your request has been completed and ready for review, you will receive an email from Nuance Powershare with instructions on how to create an account. Additionally, you will receive a MyChart message containing your token code to access your images.
