Digital Health

Convenient Care, a Click or Call Away

Digital health — also known as telemedicine or telehealth — is a convenient way for you to get the care you need, where and when you need it. A wide range of health needs can be addressed through digital health services, including routine visits, follow-up appointments, post-operation care, medication review and more.

Why Choose Digital Health?

Digital health offers many benefits to patients, including:

  • Convenience: You can access health care from the comfort of your home, saving you time.
  • Provider access: Through a video visit, you’ll be able to benefit from our wide network of highly skilled providers, no matter where you’re located.
  • Security: We use HIPAA-compliant videoconferencing technology to protect your privacy and the security of your health information.
  • Priority: You can quickly connect with a trusted provider when health concerns arise.
Innovation & Impact

Video-Assisted Neonatal Care

UVM Health's youngest patients get immediate support from our neonatal intensive care experts at Golisano Children's Hospital, thanks to innovations in video-assisted health care.

Digital Health Services

University of Vermont Health offers multiple digital health options to address your needs.

Appointment Self-Scheduling

If you are a current patient, you can schedule certain appointments through your MyChart account. If your visit can be done virtually, you will be able to choose that option when scheduling.

  • You can schedule directly with your primary care provider, and request appointments with other providers.
  • If you are referred to a specialist, you may be able to self-schedule through MyChart. Several specialists' offices have the ability to invite you to self-schedule at a time that is convenient for you.
  • When scheduling an appointment, you can request to be put on a waitlist. If your provider has a cancellation, you’ll receive a notification that will allow you to claim the open appointment.
Provider Messaging

If you have a non-urgent medical concern, you can message your existing providers directly through MyChart. They will review your message and respond as soon as they can. You also have the ability to attach images, which may be able to help your provider give a more accurate response to your questions.

Provider-to-Provider Consults

Our providers use digital health to offer advanced care to patients across Vermont and northern New York.

  • E-consults: Allow primary care providers to consult with specialists – meaning you can access specialized expertise without needing a referral.
  • Teleconsults (acute care consults): Part of certain critical care services within our health system, such as the NICU and our stroke center. These video visits allow specialists to be “in the room” with providers and patients in other locations, allowing you to get the care you need when you need it.
Remote Patient Monitoring

Remote patient monitoring, or eMonitoring, allows providers to monitor your health data outside of a traditional health care setting, so you can manage your health from home. Your health data is collected through a touchscreen tablet and transmitted wirelessly to your provider, who can review your vital signs and symptoms daily and contact you to discuss any changes as necessary.

Remote patient monitoring is designed for high-risk Home Health & Hospice patients who require skilled home health care. If you are eligible for remote patient monitoring, you will be given more information during intake and referral.

Video Visits

A video visit is a secure online appointment using HIPAA-compliant technology, accessed through MyChart on a phone, tablet or computer. You and your provider can see, hear and speak to each other.

Your video visit is private and not recorded — only you and your provider participate in the appointment, and it’s completed in real time.

Almost all departments across the UVM Health (including pediatric services) offer video visits when appropriate.

Your provider’s office will determine if a video visit is right for your needs. You can request a video visit when scheduling an appointment through MyChart or over the phone.

Video-Assisted Neonatal Care

Newborns in need of critical care in Vermont and northern New York are often transported to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at University of Vermont Children’s Hospital – the only NICU in Vermont – when they are born prematurely, are in need of supportive measures like respiratory therapy or require life-saving care and surgery.

Cameras with very high video resolution have been installed at UVM Health's community hospitals allowing specialists at the UVM Children’s Hospital to see what’s happening with the baby, providing real-time advice to doctors on the ground who may have questions. Transport ambulances have also been equipped with cameras connecting them with the NICU, meaning that connected care on the way to the hospital can be continuous.

Questions & Technical Support

If you have questions about your appointment, please contact your provider’s office. If you need technical assistance, please call MyChart Technical Support at 802-847-1830.

Digital Health FAQs

Does insurance cover digital health?

Coverage depends on your individual insurance carrier. However, most carriers cover some form of digital health. Contact your provider's office or your insurance company if you have questions about your insurance coverage.

Does a video visit count as a qualified HSA or FSA expense?

Most HSA or FSA programs consider a video visit to be a qualified health care expense. Please contact your HSA or FSA program directly to learn more.

Do video visits provide the same quality of care as in-person visits?

Yes. We carefully select the types of appointments that are available through video visits to ensure you receive the same high level of care as an in-person visit to your provider’s office.

How do I schedule a video visit?

Your provider’s office will determine if a video visit is right for your needs. You can request a video visit when scheduling an appointment through MyChart or over the phone.

You will need a MyChart account for your visit. MyChart is a personalized patient portal that allows you to stay connected to your health care from wherever you are. If you do not already have an account, learn how to create one here. If you already have a MyChart account, please make sure you are able to log in before your visit.

Are interpreter services available for video visits?
