Parkinson's disease is a progressive brain disorder affecting as many as one million people in the United States. Approximately 60,000 new cases are diagnosed in the U.S. every year.

Parkinson's Disease: What You Need to Know

Parkinson's disease occurs when nerve cells that produce dopamine - an important chemical in the brain - die or become impaired. Symptoms can include tremor or trembling of the hands, arms and other body parts; stiffness; slowness of movement; speech problems; impaired balance and coordination; and dementia.

Early signs of the disease may be barely noticeable. Symptoms usually begin on one side of the body.

The cause of Parkinson's disease is unknown. Some research theories suggest that genetic factors or environmental toxins may be involved.
