Movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease are debilitating neurological conditions that affect the speed, fluency, quality and ease of movement. Millions of people suffer from these disorders; it is estimated that one million people in the U.S. have Parkinson's disease and 60,000 new cases are diagnosed every year.

Movement Disorders: What You Need to Know

The University of Vermont Medical Center provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of patients with movement disorders including: 

Our Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratory offers specialized studies to diagnose these disorders, including electromyography(EMG) - a test that determines if nerves and muscles are functioning properly.

Specialists from neurology, neurosurgery and neuroradiology work together to provide the highest level of care for patients, including deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease.

Advanced treatments also are available for dystonia and spasticity - conditions that cause involuntary muscle spasms and contractions — including the use of EMG-guided injections of Botox (botulinum toxin) and surgically implanted pumps that deliver medicine to control spasticity.
