A wellness visit is not one-size-fits all — it is an opportunity to have an open conversation with your provider so they can understand how best to support you and your health needs.
A Whole-Person Approach to Care
At University of Vermont Health, you’re more than just a number. We get to know you and learn about your lifestyle to identify ways to maintain and improve your health and well-being. When you meet with your care team, we help you and your family achieve health goals through preventive care, wellness education, family planning and pregnancy care, smoking cessation and disease management.
Depending upon your health goals and needs, your care team may include a primary care or family medicine provider or nurse, pharmacist, dietitian, health coach, mental health provider and comprehensive support from care management.
What to Expect From a Wellness Visit
The goal of a wellness visit is to help you take control of your health. That means your visit will be customized around you and your unique needs, focusing on areas in which you may need additional support.
Preventive care addresses the whole body — in addition to helping you manage your physical health and prevent illness, providers can work with you to identify ways to improve your mental and emotional well-being. We’re here to help you live your happiest, healthiest life possible.

Frequently Asked Questions
Many patients are familiar with the concept of a physical exam, but that term doesn’t fully capture what we do. “Wellness visit” is a more accurate way of describing these appointments and their purpose.
You may receive a physical exam during a wellness visit, but the larger goal of a wellness visit is to help you stay well. Your provider will ask questions about your current lifestyle and habits to determine how your care team can best support your needs. Whether you may benefit from health coaching, smoking cessation, mental health or nutrition counseling, your care team will take a proactive approach to your health by offering recommendations on how you can prevent illness and live a longer, healthier life.
We recommend a yearly wellness visit with your provider to be proactive about your health and wellness.
We follow the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommendations on screenings. Your provider will let you know which screenings are recommended for you based on your age, medical history, lifestyle and overall health.
