Early Hearing Detection & Intervention

Early Hearing Detection & Intervention
A child has an ear check by a pediatric provider at the UVM Medical Center Children's Hospital.

Collaborative, multi-disciplinary care to support your child's hearing health.

The Vermont Early Hearing Detection & Intervention (VTEHDI) Program supports Vermont patients and families with statewide newborn and early periodic hearing screenings. These screenings are in collaboration with birth hospitals and other community providers such as audiologists, early head start, homebirth midwives and primary care professionals. These partnerships ensure timely follow-up to screening and appropriate referrals for diagnostic hearing testing and early intervention services.

This program is run and sustained through a partnership between University of Vermont Medical Center and the Vermont Department of Health Division of Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHN). Grant funding is received from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Health Services Resources Administration (HRSA).

VTEHDI provides support and care coordination for families and their babies throughout the newborn hearing screening process, as well as training and technical support for hospitals and community providers. VTEHDI works with state and national agencies and organizations to achieve the national 1-3-6 EHDI benchmarks, which are:

  • Screening before one month
  • Diagnosis before three months
  • Intervention before six months
