Testicular cancer forms in the tissues of one or both testicles. Although testicular cancer is not common compared with other types of cancer, it is the most common cancer in males that are 15-35 years old in the US. Even if it spreads beyond the testicle, it is one of the most curable types of cancer. At the UVM Medical center, our team of experts uses the latest technology to diagnose and treat testicular cancer.

Treatments for Testicular Cancer

Testicular cancer treatment depends on the type and stage of cancer, as well as other factors such as your age, overall health, and personal preferences. Some cancer treatments raise your risk of infertility. Talk to your doctor about sperm banking before receiving any testicular cancer treatments.

At the UVM Medical Center, our team of specialists will design a treatment plan that is specifically for you. Treatment options include:

  • Chemotherapy - chemotherapy kills cancer cells using different types of medication.
  • Radiation Therapy - the use of high-energy beam, such as X-rays and protons, to destroy cancer cells.
  • Surgery - surgery is the primary treatment for almost all testicular cancer types and stage. The surgical procedures we perform to treat testicular cancer include:
    • Testicular Removal Surgery - also known as radical inguinal orchiectomy. During this surgery, a surgeon makes a small incision in your groin and takes out the entire testicle. You then have the choice to have a prosthetic, saline-filled testicle inserted. Patients receive anesthetics during this surgery.
    • Lymph Node Removal Surgery - also known as retroperitoneal lymph node dissection. For some patients, the surgeon will remove the lymph nodes in your groin at the same time the testicle is removed. Depending on your diagnosis, the lymph nodes may be removed at a later time.
