Vascular Interventional Radiology at University of Vermont Health – Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital offers patients leading-edge, minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat a wide range of vascular conditions. Interventional radiologists perform treatments using small incisions, which result in less pain and a shorter recovery time than traditional surgical methods.
Our Services
We provide a variety of procedures, including, but not limited to:
- Angiography: X-ray imaging of arteries and veins to detect blockages. Often treated with stents to open narrowed vessels.
- Angioplasty and stenting: A balloon is used to open blocked arteries via a catheter inserted through the skin.
- Thrombolysis: Clot-busting medication delivered directly to blood clots through a catheter.
- Inferior vena cava filter placement: Filters placed in the inferior vena cava to prevent clots from reaching the lungs.
- Venous stenting: Stents used to treat deep vein thrombosis or vein blockages.
- Varicose vein treatment: Laser therapy for painful varicose veins.
- Image-guided biopsy: Minimally invasive needle biopsies guided by imaging.
- Image-guided drainage: Draining abscesses or abnormal fluid collections.
- Gastrostomy tube placement: Feeding tubes placed directly into the stomach.
- Embolization: Blocking blood vessels to stop bleeding or reduce blood flow to abnormal tissue.
- Women’s health procedures: Embolization for uterine fibroids and pelvic congestion syndrome.
- Men’s health procedures: Embolization to treat varicoceles.
- Venous access and chest port placement: Port placement for chemotherapy, nutrition or antibiotics.
- Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty: Bone cement injections to relieve spinal fracture pain.
- Interventional oncology: Cancer treatments including:
- Cryoablation: Freezing tumors with a needle probe.
- Microwave ablation: Heat-based tumor destruction using microwave energy.
- Radiofrequency ablation: Heat-based tumor destruction using radiofrequency energy.
- Yttrium-90 radioembolization: Radioactive beads delivered to tumors via catheter.
- Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE): Blocking blood flow and delivering chemotherapy to tumors.
- Transarterial Embolization (TAE): Blocking blood flow to tumors without chemotherapy.

This recognition ensures that your interventional radiology procedure is performed by a physician who meets the rigorous standards set by the interventional radiology specialty and their peers in the field.
American Board of Radiology
Specializing in the use of X-ray, CT scans and other precision image-guiding technologies for interventional procedures, our interventional radiology physicians are also certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR). Many of our interventionalists have earned the ABR’s subspecialty certification in vascular and interventional radiology, which recognizes the additional training these individuals have received to provide you with the highest quality care.
