Preliminary Track

The Internal Medicine Residency Preliminary Track provides residents bound for training in other specialties with a broad exposure to Internal Medicine. The curriculum for residents completing a preliminary year is similar to other first year IM residents. Ample elective time allows the residents to prepare for specialty training or to expand their knowledge in focused areas of internal medicine.

We offer two preliminary positions to applicants that are applying to the UVMMC advanced programs of Radiology or Dermatology. After completion of the first year, Preliminary interns will then continue their training at the University of Vermont in their chosen field. Note: Dermatology and Radiology preliminary interns do not have to do Emergency Medicine rotations. We offer one preliminary position that is not attached to an advanced program.

Applicants interested in Neurology Residency at the University of Vermont should only apply to Neurology and will have a full preliminary year scheduled on the Internal Medicine services. Note: Neurology preliminary residents complete two weeks of Emergency Medicine.

Applicants interested in Anesthesia Residency at the University of Vermont should apply only to Anesthesia and will have 6 months scheduled on the Internal Medicine services and 6 months on the General Surgery services.  Note: Anesthesia preliminary residents complete four weeks of Emergency Medicine.
