Letter from the Director

Welcome to the University of Vermont Headache Medicine Fellowship, accredited by the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties. Our fellowship is centered in the UVMMC Headache Center, where our five UCNS-certified headache medicine specialists, headache medicine specialized Nurse Practitioner, dedicated headache nurses, and support staff come together to provide excellent clinical care. UVMMC is the only academic medical center in Vermont and serves approximately 1,000,000 people. Our headache clinic cares for adult and pediatric patients from throughout Vermont and northern New York via both in person and telemedicine visits.

We offer both 1 year full time and 2 year part time fellowships. Our fellowship focuses on excellence in clinical care, and incorporates regular educational conferences, a research project, and teaching of residents to enhance learning. Fellows will be trained in headache medicine differential diagnosis, acute and preventive pharmacologic treatments, and nonpharmacologic and integrative approaches. Procedures taught during our fellowship include nerve blocks, trigger point injections, and onabotulinum toxin A injections. We include pediatric headache clinic as a routine part of our program, and options to rotate in pain clinic, orofacial pain, and other electives are available. Our headache medicine faculty emphasize a compassionate and supportive approach to caring for patients with headache disorders, and our founder, Dr. Robert Shapiro, is a national leader in headache disorders advocacy.

We welcome applicants from neurology, family medicine, internal medicine, psychiatry, and physiatry backgrounds. Our graduates are eligible for UCNS board certification in headache medicine. We adhere to the standard American Headache Society timeline for fellowship application, learn more on the Headache Medicine Fellowship Opportunities website.
