Message from the Director
The Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (VIR) offers a five-year advanced residency training program in Integrated Interventional Radiology with two positions annually.
Our division performs over 10,000 procedures annually in addition to more than 2,500 inpatient and clinic consultations. With one of the highest trainee-to-procedure ratios in the country, trainees will have the opportunity to function with graduated levels of supervision. In addition to 7 IR Faculty, the division is supported by 4 Advanced Practice Providers.
As the largest hospital and the only academic medical center in Vermont, the breadth of clinical experience we offer is immense for both vascular and non-vascular intervention. Our extensive referral network ensures frequent exposure to complex patients, and our role as the community hospital for the Burlington area translates into full spectrum training in general IR. This combination of tertiary subspecialty IR as well as more general cases allows our graduates to excel in any future practice setting after they complete their training. For those interested in research, we offer opportunities for clinical research.
The Radiology Department encourages education at all levels, and medical students from the Larner College of Medicine as well as diagnostic radiology residents rotate through IR regularly. All IR Residents are given the opportunity to participate in the education of residents and medical students that rotate through IR.
The integrated IR residency is clinically oriented and incorporates DR, IR, and clinical management of patients. Clinical rotations are integrated with diagnostic and interventional radiology rotations so the trainee can maintain and build their IR skills alongside their training in diagnostic imaging. Integrated IR residents participate in IR clinic longitudinally through all years of residency, and through all rotations. Our faculty are committed to providing the best training in Interventional Radiology, and we encourage all that are interested to reach out to learn more.
At UVM, we embrace diversity in its broadest forms, encompassing and exploring the dimensions of not only racial and ethnic diversity, but also gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, religion, belief, thought or philosophy, disability, education level, socioeconomic background, Veteran status, and life experience. We strive to provide an education and a culture that is accepting and supportive of this broader diversity. We are guided by the tenets in UVM: Our Common Ground and are committed to creating a culture that supports and encourages respect for every individual, recognizes and values our diverse backgrounds.
We look forward to meeting you!
Bill S. Majdalany, MD FSIR
