Message from Dr. Julian Sprague, Fellowship Program Director

Welcome!  Our combined Hematology/Medical Oncology Fellowship training program at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont is a minimum of three years of training in which every attempt is made to individualize the program to the specific interests and needs of the Fellow by maintaining maximum flexibility beyond the basic requirements set forth by the Accrediting Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Overall, our program is designed to produce broadly competent professionals with scholarly strengths who have the potential to pursue academic or clinical practice careers.

The University of Vermont College of Medicine and its main, on-campus tertiary care teaching hospital, UVM Medical Center, offers a program designed to effectively prepare physicians for successful ABIM board certification in both Hematology and Medical Oncology.

The clinical faculty physicians within the Hematology/Oncology Division, have full time academic appointments in the Department of Medicine and are members of the Vermont Cancer Center, which offers many cancer research opportunities for Fellows in laboratory and clinical fields. For example, the Hemostasis and Thrombosis research training track is embedded within the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship, and offers a spectrum of attractive clinical and research opportunities for an interested Fellow. This track is supported by a National Institutes of Health training grant.

The Vermont Cancer Center's outpatient Hematology/Medical Oncology clinics as well as the disease-specific Multidisciplinary Clinics (MDCs), are located conveniently in the UVM Medical Center Ambulatory Care Center which is immediately adjacent to the main hospital and enhances the Fellow's clinical experiences in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.

Our outstanding faculty-including both our physician faculty and Advance Practice Providers, is committed to assisting every fellow in achieving their medical career goals.  We welcome your questions and look forward to your interest in our program.
