Message from the Director

The Cytopathology Division of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the Larner College of Medicine at University of Vermont and UVM Medical Center in Burlington was one of the original four US departments designated as a Center of Excellence by the American Society of Cytopathology.

Our ACGME accredited Cytopathology Fellowship program commenced in 1995, and has graduated annual Fellows, all of whom have obtained their Boards in Cytopathology, and continue to use Cytopathology on an ongoing and active basis in their academic or private practices.

The year-long program aims to develop the general pathology graduate into an informed, capable, experienced, and confident cytopathologist, cognizant of both the advantages and pitfalls of cytodiagnosis, and equipped to provide specialist advice and services to ensure patients of optimum cytodiagnosis.

Fellowship training offers a blend of academic and practical training in the setting of a university health care system, with a large geographic referral area. The medical center receives the full range of specimen types available for cytodiagnosis, and offers Fellows comprehensive forums for teaching, discussion, clinico-pathologic presentation, and research. Fellows participate actively in the busy academic programs of the Cytopathology including an active fine needle aspiration service with opportunities for graduated responsibility related to rapid on-site evaluations and training in ultrasound guided fine needle aspirations.

UVM Medical Center/UVM welcomes potential Fellows wishing to avail themselves of the ample opportunities of a vigorous program in an established medical center with a strong tradition of excellence in teaching, diagnosis, and research.
