Welcome from the Program Director
Greetings - and thanks for considering the University of Vermont for Residency in Internal Medicine. I want to introduce you to some of the features of our program that make us unique, and share with you why I think UVM is such a special place to train.
People
The people who choose to live, train and work here at the University of Vermont are, without question, our greatest asset. Residents and faculty share a passion for the opportunities that our superb academic medical center affords, but are also interested in all that our top-rated small city offers. They are curious, friendly, hard-working, caring colleagues who focus on how to deliver the best possible care for our patients in a highly functioning team environment. Our world-class faculty has teaching as its #1 priority, and displays their amazing commitment to learners every day - on rounds, during didactic sessions, in the clinic or in the research setting.
Place
We are extremely lucky to work and learn in a large, academic medical center that serves a patient population from a broad geographic and socioeconomic base. As a major tertiary center serving a large catchment area, we see breadth and variety while also providing all the care in our own community. Burlington is a fantastically livable city with many offerings but on a much more accessible level compared to a big city. Whether your passion is arts, music, food or the great outdoors, there truly is something for everyone.
Priorities
It is critical to us that our residents play a major role in important decisions within the residency such as scheduling and curriculum and develop a sense of ownership over our program. We strive to achieve balance in autonomy/supervision, life/work, and education/service while realizing that these can, at times, feel like competing priorities. Our early and successful adoption of the 4+1 block schedule has helped us assure residents have more representative and enjoyable ambulatory weeks. Residents are engaged in multiple program supported and resident run groups such as our Wellness Committee which focuses on program improvements and resident well-being. We emphasize and encourage a spirit of curiosity. Our residents, students and faculty are always attempting to answer the big and small questions that come up every day in the course of patient care.
Possibilities and Passions
Our residents will be prepared for multiple career directions, whether in primary care, hospital or subspecialty medicine in an academic or community environment. While our clinical care is highly patient-centered, our approach to resident education including providing the knowledge and skills necessary for success in diverse professional careers, is highly resident-centered. Our approachable faculty support a close and cooperative learning and mentoring environment. We offer dedicated research time to help residents successfully complete a required research project. We support international and away rotations and within in the last year our residents have worked in Alaska, India and Turkey.
Personalized learning
We provide a comprehensive conference series, encouraging active learning with the use of audience-response, case-based learning and simulation. This includes a dedicated ambulatory curriculum delivered in our resident clinic. We purchase MKSAP for all of our residents. In the ambulatory setting, we have incorporated the Yale Ambulatory Curriculum into our Wednesday morning teaching session.
