Ambulatory Infusion

Ambulatory Infusion at UVM Health

Infusion therapies are medications delivered by a needle (injection) or through a flexible tube (catheter) into your vein. You may need these medications after a sudden (acute) illness or when you’re managing a long-term (chronic) health condition. You may also have intravenous infusion therapy when you’re treated for cancer.

Ambulatory infusion at University of Vermont Health provides this care in a warm and comfortable setting. We offer ambulatory infusion at convenient locations across Vermont and northern New York.

Why Choose UVM Health?

As one of the leading ambulatory infusion programs in the region, we offer:

  • Clinical expertise: Our highly trained registered nurses deliver your medication and oversee your experience at our ambulatory infusion centers. Our on-site teams also include nurse practitioners, medical assistants and board-certified pharmacists.
  • Personalized attention: You can expect your infusion nurse to spend quality time with you while you’re at the infusion center. We keep our nurse-to-patient ratio low so we can focus on you and your needs.
  • Comfortable atmosphere: Our ambulatory infusion centers feature cozy cubbies with recliners, TVs and WiFi. Some have private rooms and free parking. Whether you’re here for five minutes or eight hours, we aim to make your time as comfortable as possible.

Conditions We Treat

We use infused medications to treat many health conditions. Your provider may recommend ambulatory infusion if you need:

  • Antibiotics
  • Antifungals
  • Antivirals
  • Blood (hematologic) therapies, including infusions of red blood cells, plasma and platelets
  • Hydration
  • Pain medication
  • Nutrition

Some of our ambulatory infusion centers offer oncology infusions to treat cancer.

What to Expect

Your experience with our ambulatory infusion services begins with a referral from your provider. You can expect:

Comprehensive Clinical Care

Our board-certified pharmacists work with your provider to determine the most effective infused medication for you. We check in with you about how you’re doing after your infusion. Our pharmacists and providers communicate through your electronic medical record (EMR), so your care team has real-time information about your health status.

Personalized Service

Our on-site nurse practitioner will talk with you about your medications and educate you about side effects to look out for. They will answer your questions and let you know what you can expect. Your infusion nurse will keep you comfortable while you receive your infusion.

If you have many visits to our infusion centers, our nurses may offer routine care for your:

  • Peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC line): A flexible tube that allows us to access veins without a needle stick each time.
  • Port: A small metal or plastic disc implanted under your skin, which is connected to a catheter when it’s time for infusion.
Comfort and Convenience

We understand that taking time out of your day to get an infusion can disrupt your schedule. Our locations offer WiFi so you can stay in touch and keep up with work or other tasks if you’d like. Recliners, TVs, infusion cubbies and private rooms at some locations make your time here as relaxing as possible.

Flexible Scheduling

We do our absolute best to make infusions work for your schedule. Some of our ambulatory infusion centers offer evening and weekend appointments. Whenever possible, we offer flexible appointment times that meet your needs.

Supportive Care

Some of our ambulatory infusion centers offer access to additional supportive services, including:

Financial Assistance

Health Assistance Program

Our Health Assistance Program (HAP) helps eligible low- and middle-income families get prescription medications at no cost, even if you have insurance.
