Types of Gynecologic Surgery
At UVM Health, we personalize your care to meet your medical needs and individual preferences. Our team helps you understand the benefits and risks of surgery so you can decide your best path forward.
We use gynecologic surgical procedures for both diagnosis and treatment. In some cases, we can diagnose and treat a condition at the same time. Our goal is to provide care that helps you lead a full, active life. Whenever possible, we use minimally invasive techniques. Compared with open surgery, these approaches lead to faster recovery with less pain. We often perform them as outpatient procedures, which means you go home the same day.
Our gynecologists have expertise in a wide range of surgical procedures, including:
Placement of a thin, lighted tube through your cervix into your uterus. Hysteroscopy is used to diagnose conditions inside the uterus and remove polyps and fibroids.
Placement of a laparoscope (a thin, lighted tube with a camera at one end) and surgical tools into your abdomen through small incisions. These tools are used to perform a variety of operations.
Open surgery in your abdominal cavity used to diagnose and treat complex conditions, such as unexplained pelvic pain, large fibroids or cancer. When appropriate, a mini-laparotomy using a smaller incision can be done.
Robotic surgery is a special type of laparoscopic surgery that uses robotic instruments remotely controlled by your surgeon. Robotic technology is typically used for complex surgeries that require a high level of precision.
Minimally Invasive Procedures
Common procedures we perform include:
Opening your cervix and removing tissue from the lining of your uterus (endometrium). D&C is used to diagnose and treat abnormal uterine bleeding, miscarriage or for abortion care.
Endometrial ablation is the removal or destruction of the endometrium (the tissue that lines the inside of the uterine cavity) to control heavy bleeding. This is a minimally invasive procedure typically done with hysteroscopy.
A hysterectomy is the removal of your uterus to treat conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic organ prolapse and cancer. We also perform hysterectomy and oophorectomy as part of gender-affirming care.
Removal of uterine fibroids without removing your uterus. Myomectomy may be performed by a hysteroscopy, laparoscopy or an open procedure, depending on the location, size and number of fibroids.
Oophorectomy is the removal of one or both ovaries using laparoscopic or open surgery. You may have an oophorectomy to treat ovarian cysts or other ovarian conditions, or to prevent ovarian cancer.
Removal of one or both fallopian tubes using laparoscopic or open surgery. We perform this procedure to treat ectopic pregnancies or fallopian tube conditions. It is also a permanent birth control method and prevention measure for people at high risk of ovarian cancer.
Permanently closing your fallopian tubes so you cannot become pregnant. We perform most tubal ligations using laparoscopic surgery. In some cases, tubal ligation may be reversible with a surgery called tubal reanastomosis. Our reproductive endocrinology and infertility specialists offer consultations to determine if you may be eligible for this procedure.
