Family Planning Services
Birth control (contraception) helps you prevent pregnancy. At UVM Health, we provide contraception counseling to help you decide which form of contraception is best for you. We provide all methods of FDA-approved birth control, including:
- Cervical cap/Diaphragm
- Condoms
- Depo-Provera
- Implant birth control (Nexplanon)
- Intrauterine device (IUD)
- Patch
- Pill
- Tubal ligation
- Vaginal ring
- Vasectomy
You can usually receive any birth control method at the time of your visit, including an IUD or implant. In general, birth control is very safe, but some people experience side effects. After you start birth control, we are happy to see you back to check how you are doing and make sure the contraceptive meets your needs. Your provider will talk to you about what to expect with your chosen method. If side effects don’t go away, talk to your provider about trying a different method.
Our OB-GYN subspecialists offer complex implant and IUD insertion and removal and our Burlington, VT location has been designated a Center of Experience for complex implant removals.
Gynecology specializes in preventing and treating diseases of the female reproductive system and provides routine and problem-focused care from puberty to menopause and beyond.
A miscarriage is the loss of a pregnancy during the first 20 weeks. Miscarriages are very common, and you can even have a miscarriage before you know that you're pregnant.
There is no treatment that can stop a miscarriage, but we can provide supportive care. If you are having a miscarriage, you will have several treatment options including expectant management (watch and see approach), medication management or procedural care in the clinic or operating room.
We offer options counseling for unplanned, undesired, or abnormal pregnancies as well as the option for medication and procedural abortions. After assessment of your gestational age, your medical history, needs and preferences, we will review the options available to you.
Medication abortion is a method used to end an early pregnancy using medications, typically mifepristone and misoprostol. Procedural abortion is a process where suction is used to remove the pregnancy. Procedural abortion generally takes place in the clinic or in the operating room.
A vasectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that safely and effectively blocks sperm from reaching the semen during ejaculation. Also called male birth control, a vasectomy prevents pregnancy.
