Orthopedics and Rehabilitation Center
At the University of Vermont Medical Center we offer innovative approaches to health care that improve the quality of life for our patients and our community. The UVM Medical Center offers the anterior approach surgery for many patients needing a total hip replacement. The approach allows our orthopedic surgeons to perform a complex procedure with low risk of complications and reduced recovery time.
Anterior Hip Replacement - What you need to know
Anterior hip replacement is an alternative to traditional hip replacement surgery where doctors approach the hip joint between the muscles to limit soft tissue trauma. This approach maximizes the potential for early recovery and minimizes the risk of hip dislocation.
Benefits include:
- Potential for faster recovery time and less post-operative pain
- Potential for less time spent in the hospital
- No standard hip precautions required
- Facilitates accurate implant placement
During surgery, the patient is placed on a Hana Table, a state-of-the-art operating table, which allows the surgeon to move the position of the leg for optimal exposure in the least invasive way. X-ray imaging is typically used throughout the procedure to confirm position of the implant.
