Pulmonary Rehabilitation at University of Vermont Health – Elizabethtown Community Hospital is a nationally recognized program combining exercise, education and psychosocial support to strengthen your physical and emotional well-being.

How Does Pulmonary Rehabilitation Improve Your Breathing?
Participating in a pulmonary rehab program can improve your respiratory symptoms and benefit your overall health and outlook on life by:
- Reducing shortness of breath and other symptoms
- Decreasing emergency room visits and hospitalizations
- Increasing physical fitness under medical supervision
- Developing a healthy lifestyle through diet and exercise
- Learning effective coping strategies to reduce depression and anxiety
- Returning you to your normal activities of daily life
- Reducing your need for medication and extra oxygen
- Preventing your pulmonary condition from worsening
What to Expect
Features of the program include:
- Regular Exercise: Each session includes an exercise component focusing on cardiovascular endurance and fitness as well as strength. These sessions are heavily monitored to ensure you meet appropriate exertion and oxygen levels.
- Educational Programs: This component focuses on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) as well as other chronic lung diseases to provide you with a comprehensive scope of helpful information.
- Psychosocial Support: We provide support for depression, anxiety and other emotional problems that could interfere with the success and overall health of each patient doing the program.
To start the program, you will need the following sent by your referring physician or pulmonologist:
- Pulmonary Function Test
- Complete Blood Count, General Chemistry
- Chest X-Ray
- Latest Office Note
- Medication List
- Patient Demographics / Current Insurance Information
- MD Signed Referral to the Program
