Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

COPD Care at UVM Health

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, is a long-term lung condition that makes it difficult to breathe. It causes airflow blockage and breathing-related problems that usually worsen over time. COPD most often includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

COPD is common, especially among people who currently smoke or previously smoked. Early diagnosis and proper treatment can help manage symptoms, improve breathing and support a better quality of life.

Why Choose UVM Health?

Pulmonary and critical care specialists at University of Vermont Health provide expert care for patients with chronic respiratory problems, as well as critically ill patients to intensive care units. Wverhere you live in Vermont or northern New York, you can be confident that you can expect compassionate, high-quality care.

We offer:

  • Evidenced-based care: Our nationally recognized clinician-scientists conduct leading research on pulmonary conditions, including COPD. As a site for government- and industry-sponsored studies, we offer eligible patients opportunities to participate in clinical trials evaluating new therapies.
  • Advanced technology: In collaboration with UVM Health radiologists, our pulmonologists and critical care physicians use state-of-the-art imaging technology to diagnose COPD accurately and evaluate complex respiratory problems.

Symptoms of COPD

Symptoms may develop slowly and worsen over time. Common symptoms include:

  • Shortness of breath, especially during physical activity
  • Chronic cough, with or without mucus
  • Wheezing
  • Chest tightness
  • Frequent respiratory infections, such as colds or pneumonia
  • Fatigue or low energy

As COPD progresses, activities like walking, climbing stairs or getting dressed may become more difficult. Symptoms may worsen suddenly during infections or exposure to irritants. These episodes are called COPD exacerbations.

Wellness & Prevention

Evidence shows that proactive health care focused on preventing illness leads to better outcomes. We're here to help you live a healthier, happier life. We offer wellness and prevention services to empower you to take control of your health.

Diagnosing COPD

Your care team will start with a physical exam and a review of your medical history, including medications and recent illnesses.

Testing may include:

  • Spirometry: Breathing tests to measure how well your lungs work
  • Imaging: Tests that show your lung structure
  • Blood test: To rule out other conditions

COPD Treatment

Treatment focuses on easing symptoms, improving lung function and preventing flare-ups. Your care plan may include:

  • Medications: Inhalers and medicines to open airways, reduce inflammation, clear mucus or treat infections
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation: A supervised program of exercise, breathing techniques, education and support
  • Oxygen therapy: For patients with low oxygen levels in the blood
  • Lifestyle changes: Quitting smoking, saying physically active and eating a healthy, balanced diet
  • Vaccinations: Flu and pneumonia vaccines help reduce the risk of serious infections
  • Advanced treatments or procedures: Surgical or minimally invasive options, in select cases

Your care team will work closely with you to adjust treatment over time and help you manage COPD as effectively as possible.
