Rheumatologists are physicians who specialize in treating diseases that affect your joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Rheumatic diseases frequently cause arthritis and joint pain and may involve other tissues and organs, such as blood vessels, skin, lungs and eyes.

Some rheumatic diseases are autoimmune-related. Autoimmune diseases occur when your immune system targets healthy cells and tissues. They are lifelong conditions that come and go with flares (episodes of high disease activity) disrupting periods of inactivity.
