We caringly provide pediatric pulmonary services for a wide range of breathing problems, including:

What to Expect

At UVM Health, the Pulmonary Ambulatory Center houses a pulmonary function laboratory fully outfitted with the latest diagnostic equipment. Both our pediatric and adult pulmonology programs share the resources of this state-of-the-art facility.

Our highly trained specialists have extensive experience in performing a wide array of diagnostic tests to carefully evaluate your child’s breathing problems.

Some of the common diagnostic tests we use for assessing many types of pulmonary conditions include:

  • Flexible bronchoscopy
  • Pulmonary function testing such as:
    • Spirometry (to measure inhalation and exhalation of air)
    • Lung volume measurement (measure the capacity of the lungs)
    • Diffusing capacity (measures how the lungs move oxygen through the air sacs into the body)
    • Respiratory muscle pressure testing (checks the strength of the muscles that help you inhale and exhale)
    • Pulmonary exercise testing
  • Blood and laboratory testing
    • Sputum or throat cultures
    • Blood tests

Medical care can be overwhelming for children. Our Child Life Specialists help your child cope with stress, prepare for procedures and understand their care. These highly trained specialists offer your family support as you navigate our health system.

Whether your child has an appointment with one of our expert physicians or is receiving care through one of our specialized multidisciplinary clinics, you can be assured that your family has access to highly skilled pediatric pulmonary medicine specialists.

Our team performs the latest pulmonary therapies and treatments, including:

  • Comprehensive cystic fibrosis care
    • Medications (antibiotics or mucus-thinning and inhaled bronchodilator drugs to keep airways open)
    • Respiratory therapy (exercises for better breathing and loosening mucus to strengthen your child’s heart and lungs)
  • Flexible bronchoscopy (a thin bendable tube for looking inside the lungs and airways)
  • Pulmonary function testing (to see how well your child’s lungs are working)
  • Aero-digestive evaluations and management (for children who have problems breathing and swallowing because food gets into their lungs)
