Fertility Consult: Your First Visit

Thank you for your interest in the The University of Vermont Medical Center for Reproductive Medicine and Infertility. We are here to help navigate and share your journey to conception.

Your first appointment at our clinic will consist of meeting with a physician from the Reproductive Medicine team. This will be an approximately 45-60 minute consult in which the provider will obtain a detailed history from you, learn what you are seeking in care, possibly perform an exam, and discuss the next steps in your evaluation that are needed to help design a personalized, evidenced based plan of care. This usually involves setting up diagnostic testing, followed by an appointment to discuss test results and review recommended treatments and options. Of note, you may also meet other members of our specialty team, including Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Fellow physicians and our specialty certified nurses.

Depending on individual circumstances and if you have already had some testing before diagnostic testing  may include the following tests :

  • Ovarian Function Testing - This may include blood hormone levels drawn on different days of the menstrual cycle, ultrasound of the ovaries with antral follicle counting, or Antimullerian hormone testing.
  • Semen Analysis - This is an test that measures how much semen a man produces.
  • Saline Sonography - An ultrasound test to ensure that the uterine cavity is normal and possibly evaluate the tubes.
  • Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) - A “dye test” to determine whether the fallopian tubes are patent (open). The fallopian tubes are necessary for the egg to travel from the ovary to the uterus.

Once diagnostic testing has been completed, we will discuss fertility treatment options based on individual circumstances.

We have provided below, for your convenience, a number of forms and informational resources for you to read in the comfort of your home. We would be happy to discuss any questions you might have. Please call 847-1400 and ask to speak with one of our infertility specialty nurses.
