Wound Care

Experienced and Supportive Care to Improve Your Health

If you have a wound that is not responding to medical care, it may require more specialized treatment. Non-healing wounds can decrease your quality of life and, left untreated, lead to serious health complications like sepsis and gangrene.

The experienced wound care team at University of Vermont Health provides a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to wound management for patients from Vermont and northern New York. We’ll work closely with your other providers to help you heal more quickly and get back to your daily activities.

Why Choose UVM Health?

We offer:

  • Specialized expertise: Our nurses have specialized training in acute and chronic wound care. They work closely with specialists in general surgery, orthopedics and podiatry to provide you with the latest wound care therapies.
  • Customized treatment: Your providers will create a customized treatment plan that addresses your specific needs. They can help you access wound care products and treatments that cannot be found elsewhere in the area.
  • Comprehensive care: Our care team will conduct a comprehensive review of your medical and surgical history, current vital signs and vascular testing, which allows us to keep an eye on your overall health. If concerns arise, we’ll coordinate with your other providers to help you get the care you need.

Conditions We Treat

If you have a wound that has not started to heal within two weeks or has not completely healed within six weeks, you may benefit from treatment. We treat a range of conditions, including:

What to Expect

Outpatient Wound Care

Most patients are referred to wound care services by their primary care provider or a specialist, but you can also self-refer. All appointments must be scheduled in advance, and we do not accept walk-ins.

During your first visit, a trained wound care nurse will assess the type of wound you have and your overall health. They may take measurements and photos of the wound and may order further testing, including:

Based on this evaluation, we will create a treatment plan that includes targeted therapies for your specific needs. Your nurse will also provide instructions on how to care for your wound at home and how to protect it from further injury.

Once you have begun treatment, you will return regularly for treatment and monitoring. We will document the progress of your healing at each visit and send updates to your referring provider.

You should stop smoking or using any other tobacco products during your treatment, as tobacco use can prolong and prevent wound healing. If you need support with smoking cessation, please speak to your provider.

Inpatient Wound Care

If you are a hospitalized patient, our certified wound care specialists may provide consults with specialists, surgeons and Emergency Department providers to address and treat your wounds. If your wound needs continued care after leaving the hospital, our team will refer you to an outpatient wound center.
