Orthopedic Trauma & Fracture Care
Orthopedic Trauma & Fracture Care at UVM Health
Complex trauma from motor vehicle, motorcycle, skiing, snowmobile and other accidents can lead to severe fractures and tissue damage. The very best trauma care requires a fully equipped center staffed by a team of highly trained specialists.
The orthopedic trauma team at University of Vermont Health is the most experienced in the region. While many orthopedic surgeons treat broken bones (fractures) and minor muscle, ligament and tendon tears, our orthopedic traumatologists have the special training needed to treat more complex injuries. Whether you need emergency treatment, advanced trauma surgery or follow-up care during healing, our compassionate experts can help.
Why Choose UVM Health?
Our expertise in advanced surgical care and treatment for complicated injuries sets us apart in Vermont and northern New York. A full team of experts, including fellowship-trained orthopedic trauma surgeons, advanced practice providers, residents and nurses, work together for effective, collaborative treatment.
If you have a hand, wrist, upper extremity, foot or spine injury we work closely with subspecialists to coordinate your care.
As one of the leading orthopedic programs in the region, we offer:
- Specialized expertise: Our orthopedic surgeons focus exclusively on trauma care. They have trained at some of the top institutions in the country and are experienced in the complex, technically demanding skills required to bring you the most advanced treatments available.
- Spectrum of services: Our team consults with the emergency department to provide same-day surgeries for urgent injuries. We also run an outpatient clinic for follow-up visits, injuries that don’t require surgical treatment and less urgent consultations. Hospitals throughout the state refer patients with complex injuries to our expert team.
- Leading-edge treatments: Our team expertly treats both simple and major fractures around the hip, knee, ankle, foot, shoulder and elbow. We are one of the only centers treating complex bony injuries, including pelvic and acetabular fractures. We also treat limb deformities and improperly healed fractures (malunions or nonunions).
- Research emphasis: As part of a health system anchored by an academic medical center, our physician-leaders are active researchers at the forefront of orthopedic care.
The staff was very polite and took extra time to listen to me. They made this old combat Marine feel very much at ease.
Orthopedic Trauma Services
Treating orthopedic trauma starts with an accurate diagnosis. We offer X-rays on-site, so you don’t have to wait for answers before starting your path to healing.
Casts and splints stabilize your broken bones, prevent muscle spasms and reduce swelling while you heal. You may need a custom cast or splint, either with or without surgery.
We use needle aspirations to remove a small fluid sample from your joints. This can help us diagnose conditions or relieve joint pressure. We also offer injections to reduce inflammation and swelling and promote healing.
Our orthopedic trauma surgeons perform a wide range of advanced and complex procedures. You may need surgery to treat a severe fracture, improperly healed fracture (malunion or nonunion), joint deformity or infection.
Physical therapy is often part of your treatment plan when recovering from an orthopedic injury or surgery. Physical therapists help you build strength, improve range of motion and restore function.
