Pediatric Radiology at Golisano Children's Hospital
Whether it’s for a broken bone, an infection or a chronic condition, most children need imaging tests at some point. Any medical appointment or test can be overwhelming for children. At Golisano Children’s Hospital at University of Vermont Health, we aim to put your child at ease during imaging tests.
Radiologists are a crucial part of diagnosing and treating many different conditions. Our team includes a radiologist trained in pediatric imaging. We work with a wide variety of specialists across Golisano Children’s Hospital to interpret images and offer expert insight.
Why Choose Golisano Children's Hospital?
We offer:
- Advanced technology: Our program features the latest imaging technology, including a 3-Tesla (3T) MRI scanner and CT equipment. These scanners produce higher quality images at faster speeds, helping us get to the root of your child’s needs quickly.
- Child-friendly environment: Medical imaging can be stressful for children. Child Life specialists provide relaxation techniques and play-based distraction and explain what to expect in child-friendly terms.
- Research emphasis: As part of a health system anchored by an academic medical center, many of our physicians are active researchers. Your child’s care is in the hands of established experts at the forefront of pediatric radiology.
Pediatric Imaging Services
Our radiology team offers an entire range of imaging tests for children, including:
- X-ray: Safe doses of radiation create a picture of your child’s bones and soft tissues.
- Ultrasound: Sound waves help us take images of the inside of your child’s body.
- CT scan: A series of X-rays and special computers obtain an image of the inside of the body.
- MRI: Magnets and radio waves take pictures of the inside of the body.
- Fluoroscopy: This “live” X-ray captures movement within your child’s body in real time.
- Nuclear medicine imaging: Special radioactive substances (tracers) help us examine your child’s organ structure and function.
What to Expect at a Pediatric Imaging Appointment
Your child’s imaging appointment will be slightly different depending on what test they need. In general:
- You will check in and fill out any necessary forms for your child.
- A nurse will bring you and your child to the testing area and explain what to expect.
- Your child may have to change into hospital pajamas, depending on the test.
- A technologist will complete the imaging.
After your appointment, a pediatric radiologist will review and interpret your child’s images. They will share their findings with your child’s provider, who will review the results with you.
You can usually stay with your child throughout the appointment. We use multiple resources to keep your child as comfortable as possible during the test, including:
- Anesthesia or sedation, as needed
- Child Life specialists to provide distraction and calming techniques
- Special ear plugs and eye masks that allow children to watch movies during long MRIs
