TMJ Rehabilitation

TMJ Rehabilitation at UVM Health

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD), also called TMJ, is a common condition that causes jaw pain and stiffness. Many people with TMJ experience debilitating headaches, facial pain, shoulder or neck pain. This chronic discomfort can make it difficult to focus and participate in your usual activities.

At University of Vermont Health, our therapists provide a variety of specialized TMJ treatments. We develop personalized care plans delivered with compassion. Our aim is to reduce your symptoms so you can participate in the activities you enjoy with less pain.

As one of the region’s leading rehabilitation programs, we offer:

  • Patient-centered treatment: We listen to your concerns and create care plans customized to your goals. We work to make sure you understand your treatment and feel prepared to actively participate in it.

TMJ Causes

It’s often challenging to determine the root cause of TMJ. For many people, TMJ develops due to multiple factors, such as:

  • Genetics
  • Jaw injuries
  • Misaligned teeth
  • Prolonged poor posture
  • Stress
  • Teeth grinding or clenching
  • Underlying conditions, such as arthritis

TMJ Symptoms

The most common symptom of TMJ is persistent jaw pain or tenderness. You may also experience:

  • Aching near or in your ears
  • Clicking sensations when you open and close your mouth
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Facial pain
  • Pain while chewing
  • Shoulder or neck pain

What to Expect

Not everyone needs treatment for TMJ. But if pain is interfering with your quality of life or ability to participate in your usual activities, our specialists can help.

During your first appointment, a therapist will perform a physical exam and ask about your symptoms. Then they will create a personalized treatment plan designed to reduce pain and increase your jaw mobility. Your treatment may include:

  • Education about TMJ: Including lifestyle recommendations and self-relaxation techniques to reduce symptoms
  • Exercises: To stretch and strengthen your jaw and improve range of motion
  • Joint mobilization: Hands-on techniques to help reduce joint stiffness and improve range of motion
  • Soft tissue mobilization: Hands-on techniques that help break up stiff muscle tissue
