Driver Rehabilitation at UVM Health
Driving a vehicle is an important source of independence. For many people with medical conditions or physical disabilities, this kind of freedom can feel out of reach.

Conditions We Treat
New and experienced drivers may benefit from a driving evaluation. Driving assessments may be appropriate for people with a range of conditions, such as:
- Brain or spinal cord injuries
- Cerebral palsy
- History of amputation
- History of stroke
- Multiple sclerosis
- Muscular dystrophy
- Parkinson’s disease
- Visual impairment
What to Expect
We start driving evaluations with an in-depth review of your vision, thinking skills and physical abilities. This assessment helps us understand the root of any driving challenges and decide if you would benefit from further treatment.
If our occupational therapists determine that it’s safe for you to drive, you will complete an on-the-road assessment with a certified driving rehabilitation specialist. We use a special driver rehabilitation car with an automatic transmission and instructor’s brake. This evaluation helps us determine how you handle a vehicle in traffic and whether you may benefit from adaptive equipment.
After your driving assessment, our occupational therapists will work with you to develop a rehabilitation plan. Driver training occurs in one of our highly modifiable training cars, which are equipped with a driving instructors’ brake for safety purposes. We design individualized, one-on-one treatment programs to help you reach your driving goals.
