Face & Neck Cosmetic Surgery

Face & Neck Cosmetic Surgery at UVM Health

Aging can cause the skin on your forehead, eyelids, face and neck to sag and the underlying muscles to weaken. Cosmetic surgery can reverse these age-related changes and make you look and feel younger.

At University of Vermont Health, you’ll find a full range of cosmetic surgery procedures for the face and neck. Our plastic surgeons are highly skilled in performing delicate operations while minimizing scars and visible signs of surgery.

Types of Face and Neck Cosmetic Surgery

We offer a variety of cosmetic surgery options to meet your needs.

Facelift (Rhytidectomy) and Neck Lift (Platysmaplasty)

Facelift and neck lift remove excess skin and tighten the deeper layers of tissue to give you a more youthful look. During surgery, we may also inject fat taken from another area of your body (fat graft) to reduce wrinkles and enhance your facial features.

Facelift and neck lift surgery can:

  • Decrease the fold lines around your mouth (marionette lines)
  • Firm your jowls
  • Remove a double chin or excess skin and fat under your chin (turkey waddle)
  • Tighten loose skin and improve the contours of your neck

We often perform a facelift and neck lift at the same time, through the same incisions. The length and location of the incisions vary depending on your goals for surgery.

  • Traditional facelift: Incisions start at the temples in the hairline, continue around the front of the ears and end behind the ears in the scalp.
  • Neck lift: Incisions are made near your sideburn, around your ear and/or under the chin.
Brow Lift

A brow lift tightens the skin on the forehead to reduce horizontal forehead wrinkles and vertical frown lines between your eyebrows. It can also improve the appearance of wrinkles at the corners of your eyes (crow’s feet) and lift drooping eyebrows and hooded eyelids.

There are different types of brow lift procedures. Our surgeons offer a newer technique called a gliding brow lift. In this procedure, the surgeon makes very small incisions along the hairline and separates the forehead skin from the underlying muscles. They then reposition the skin and eyebrows to the desired location and secure them in place with sutures.

Compared with traditional brow lift procedures, the gliding brow lift causes minimal scarring and is less likely to damage the nerves and muscles in your forehead. It also allows for more effective eyebrow shaping and a longer lasting result.

Eye Lift (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid surgery can make your eyes look younger and brighter. When severely sagging eyelids block your field of view, surgery can also help you see better.

Blepharoplasty addresses sagging skin and fat deposits in the upper and lower eyelids and the area under the eyes. During the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision in the crease of the upper eyelid and/or just under the lash line to remove excess skin, remove or reposition fat tissue, and tighten underlying muscles.

Upper Lip Lift

An upper lip lift shortens the distance between your nose and upper lip, which lengthens as you get older. It can also give you a fuller upper lip, eliminating the need for lip fillers.

During a lip lift, the surgeon makes a small incision at the base of your nose and removes excess skin.

Combined Procedures

We often combine cosmetic surgery procedures, such as facelift and neck lift. Another common combination is brow lift and eyelid lift. Your surgeon will talk to you about all your options, including having two procedures in one surgery.

What to Expect

Every team member works to give you an exceptional experience. From consultation to surgery and follow-up care, you have knowledgeable and compassionate experts by your side.

Consultation

Your initial consultation includes a thorough review of your medical history and a discussion of your goals for cosmetic surgery. Your surgeon will explain the options and expected results to help you decide what’s right for you.

Surgery and Follow-Up Care

We perform facial cosmetic surgery in an operating room using general anesthesia, so you are asleep. Most patients can go home after surgery. Before you leave the hospital, we provide:

  • Instructions on how to care for your surgical incisions
  • Medication prescriptions to manage pain or aid healing
  • Supplies, such as dressings
  • An appointment for your first follow-up visit, usually one week after surgery

Soreness, swelling and bruising are common in the first few weeks. Most people can go back to work at one to two weeks post-surgery and resume typical activity after six to eight weeks. Depending on the type of surgery, you may have some swelling on and off for several months.

We do our best to minimize scarring. Your incisions may look red at first, but they will fade over time. Your care team will give you tips on how to decrease the appearance of scars.
