Cosmetic Surgery Consultation

Cosmetic Surgery at UVM Health

If you’re exploring your cosmetic surgery options, your starting point is a consultation. This visit establishes your goals for surgery and sets the stage for future care.

At University of Vermont Health, we take a comprehensive, pressure-free approach to consultations you may not find elsewhere. Our plastic surgeons take time to get to know you and understand what you hope to achieve through cosmetic surgery. We educate you on procedures and options so you can decide what’s right for you.

  • Supportive team: Every team member is dedicated to giving you the best possible experience. From consultation to surgery and follow-up care, we’re here to support you at every step of your journey.
  • Extensive education: We schedule a full hour for each new consultation to thoroughly discuss your options. We then meet with you one to two more times before surgery. This care and attention translate to exceptional patient satisfaction and results.
  • Comfort and convenience: Your comfort, safety and privacy are top priorities for our team. With offices in Vermont and northern New York and digital health options for some types of visits, we make it easy to access care.

What to Expect

During your consultation, you’ll meet with one of our experienced plastic surgeons. Our goal is to set realistic expectations about the procedure, its results and how it can make you feel. Cosmetic surgery should be a personal decision made by you, for you.

You are welcome to bring a family member or friend to the consultation to provide support and help you remember the information you receive.

Consultations typically include:

Goals Discussion

What do you want to achieve with cosmetic surgery? We encourage you to share your honest feelings about your appearance and what you’d like to improve.

Evaluation

The evaluation helps us make sure you are healthy enough for surgery. Your surgeon performs a physical exam and reviews your medical history. We ask about your current health conditions, medications and tobacco use.

If you do not qualify for surgery now, your provider may recommend steps to improve your health and increase your chances of being eligible, such as tobacco cessation and weight management programs.

Options Counseling

This step involves a detailed discussion about your surgical options and the risks and benefits of each. During this counseling, we will also help you understand what to expect before, during and after surgery.

Next Steps

After the consultation, we give you written materials to review at home. Having cosmetic surgery is often a complex decision. Given the large amount of information you receive during your initial appointment, it’s common to have questions or concerns. If you wish, we offer a second visit with your surgeon so you can discuss your options further.

If you are ready to move forward with surgery, we schedule a preoperative appointment to review the procedure in more detail. During the appointment, we will discuss the known risks of the procedure, any long-term effects or scarring you may experience and an expected timeline for your recovery.

At any time during the process, you can pause to reconsider your decision. We want you to feel confident and are here for you at every step to provide support and education.
