The word Autopsy is derived from the ancient Greek and means "seeing for oneself." Sometimes the autopsy reveals conditions that were not suspected prior to death. Autopsy always provides for families a better understanding of the cause of death.

Cytopathology

Cytopathology involves the microscopic evaluation of cellular samples primarily performed for the diagnosis of cancer, but also includes the diagnosis of precancerous lesions, benign tumors and inflammatory/infectious processes.

  • Annually evaluate over 26,000 Pap Tests, 3800 Non-Gyns (such as voided urine and bronchial brushings) and 2000 Fine needle aspirations (FNA) from deep and superficial masses.
  • The ThinPrep Pap Test technology and Hologic Imaging System are utilized.
  • Cytopathologists are available to perform FNA on patients with palpable lesions (soft tissue and subcutaneous masses) Rapid on-site evaluations are performed, allowing for immediate specimen triage. Call 847-5136 to schedule.
  • Offers an ACGME Cytopathology Fellowship Program.
  • Provides expert Cytopathology consultation services for specimens collected/evaluated elsewhere.
  • Hours: Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.

Histology

The Histology section is located on the main campus in Burlington, Vermont. Our mission is to provide quality driven histological results to physicians and clients in a timely manner in support of patient treatment and care. Our laboratory provides prompt, quality and accurate patient results for physicians to aid in clinical decision-making.

Histology is equipped with "cutting edge" instrumentation, information management technology, and a team of highly skilled technical staff and management support to facilitate the workload. There are approximately 42,000 internal cases in addition to 3,000 external hospital cases. These cases range from tiny biopsies to large excisions, including whole organs.

Our technical staff consists of eleven technicians and technologists that perform the daily workload. There are two Charge Histotechnologists and one technical Specialist that provide additional support and expertise. The supervisor oversees the section and implements appropriate policies and standard operating procedures to ensure diagnostic quality, accuracy, and safety.

  • 50 Special stains
  • 18 Muscle histochemical assays
  • 2 Immunohistochemistry platforms utilized for 171 antibodies
  • In situ hybridization assays available
  • Research services for both internal and external clients
  • Consultations for Surgical Pathology cases can be requested via our Surgical Pathology Laboratory Support Section
