Anatomic pathology diagnoses diseases based on tissue and fluid samples collected from patients. Our highly skilled pathologists offer a range of specialized services and consultations to meet your needs.
Autopsy (Hospital Pathology)
Academic autopsies are performed on patients post-mortem to answer questions regarding the nature of the deceased’s illness, cause of death or co-existing conditions. Autopsies may be requested by a physician or a family member.

Cytopathology
Cytopathology involves the microscopic evaluation of cellular samples to aid in diagnosing cancer, precancerous lesions, benign tumors and inflammatory and infectious diseases.
Evaluation of:
- Fine needle aspirations (FNA) of palpable lesions (soft tissue and subcutaneous masses)
- Non-gynecological specimens (such as bronchial brushings and voided urine)
- Pap tests (using Hologic ThinPrep imaging technology)
We are also able to perform and interpret palpation-guided FNAs.
Rapid on-site evaluations may be available, allowing for immediate specimen triage. Please contact our lab for more information.
We also offer cytopathology consultation services for specimens collected and/or evaluated elsewhere.

Histology
We offer a full range of tissue processing techniques to aid in clinical decision-making. We use leading-edge instrumentation and information management technology to facilitate our work, evaluating cases ranging from tiny biopsies to large excisions (including whole organs).
- Immunohistochemistry (two platforms utilized for more than 180 antibodies)
- In situ hybridization assays
- Muscle histochemical assays (18 histochemistries)
- Special stains (50 types)
We also offer research services and consultations for surgical pathology cases.

Surgical Pathology
Our surgical pathology lab processes and analyzes tissue samples removed during surgery or biopsy to help diagnose disease and determine a treatment plan. Our specimen mix includes both inpatient and outpatient cases from across the region.
The lab is open Monday–Friday, 4 am–11 pm and Saturday, 5 am-1 pm.
Our lab staff handles specimen processing, gross and microscopic examination, and preliminary and final diagnoses. We work closely with histology to provide prompt, accurate results to clinicians.
Surgical pathology is overseen by attending pathologists with expertise in both general anatomic pathology and specialty areas including:
