Enlarged Prostate

Enlarged Prostate Care at UVM Health

An enlarged prostate, also called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a common condition that affects many men as they age. The prostate is a small gland located below the bladder. When it becomes larger, it can press against the urethra and bladder, causing problems with urination.

Why Choose UVM Health?

As one of the region’s leading providers, we offer:

  • Comprehensive, collaborative care: Our board-certified urologists have extensive experience treating enlarged prostate. They work closely with specialists across UVM Health to develop a personalized treatment plan that supports your goals.
  • Advanced treatment options: We offer the full range of treatment options for enlarged prostate, beginning with noninvasive methods whenever possible. If surgery is needed, you can feel confident in the skill and expertise of our board-certified surgeons.

Symptoms of Enlarged Prostate

Symptoms often develop gradually. Common symptoms include:

  • A weak or slow urinary stream
  • Difficulty starting urination
  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • A sudden, strong urge to urinate
  • Feeling that the bladder is not completely empty
  • Dribbling at the end of urination
  • Stopping and starting during urination
  • Urinary tract infections if the bladder does not empty completely

Diagnosing Enlarged Prostate

Your provider will review your symptoms, medical history and perform a physical exam. Diagnostic testing may include:

  • Digital rectal exam: To check prostate size
  • Urine tests: To measure urine flow or how well the bladder empties
  • Blood test: To evaluate kidney function or prostate‑specific antigen (PSA) levels
  • Imaging: Ultrasound to assess the prostate or bladder

Enlarged Prostate Treatment

Treatment depends on the severity of symptoms and overall health. Options include:

  • Lifestyle changes: Reducing caffeine, alcohol and evening fluids
  • Medications: To relax the prostate muscles or shrink the prostate
  • Minimally invasive procedures: Such as Urolift or needle ablation to open the blocked urine pathway
  • Surgery: For more significant blockage or complications

Your care team will work with you to choose a treatment plan that fits your needs, goals and lifestyle while helping you manage your symptoms confidently.
