Sleep Disorder Services
Our sleep medicine team provides comprehensive services to accurately diagnose and treat your sleep problems.
Your first visit with our sleep medicine team will involve a consultation and sleep disorder evaluation with one of our experts. With more than 70 documented sleep disorders, it’s critical that our sleep specialists gather as much information as possible about your sleep problem to provide you with the best recommendations and care.
During a consultation, you will meet with one of our compassionate and skilled sleep medicine professionals to discuss your sleeping concerns and medical history. A thorough physical exam is also performed. If you have a bed partner, we welcome them to attend consultations to provide additional insight into your sleeping issues.
At your consultation, your sleep medicine specialist may recommend a diagnostic sleep study either at one of our state-of-the-art sleep lab facilities or, when clinically appropriate, in the comfort of your own home.
We operate several full-service sleep labs throughout our network for overnight and daytime evaluation of sleep disorders like sleep apnea, snoring, sleepwalking and restless leg syndrome. Sleep studies allow us to monitor your brain activity, eye movements, muscle tone, heart rate and rhythm, and breathing pattern while you sleep.
Only specially trained technicians and certified polysomnographic technologists staff our sleep labs, ensuring that your sleep study will always be performed by a knowledgeable expert.
Overseen by our board-certified specialists and staffed by specially trained sleep technologists, our sleep labs are equipped with high-tech digital video and audio systems to precisely monitor your sleeping position, sounds and movement in conjunction with any breathing irregularities.
The painless study involves taping or using an adhesive to securely attach electrodes and sensors to areas on your face and head and legs. The procedure allows for free movement in bed during your overnight sleep study.
Making you feel at home as much as possible, our sleep labs feature private rooms and may be equipped with flat screen TVs, plush recliners, personal bathrooms and other essentials.
Many factors can make it hard to fall asleep and sleep soundly, including anxious thinking about how you can’t get to sleep. The gold standard for treating insomnia, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), is an evidence-based psychological treatment approach only found in the most advanced sleep programs.
Shown to be 80% successful in improving insomnia, this highly effective “pill-free” therapy is provided by our board-certified clinical psychology team. With extensive experience diagnosing and treating insomnia, our sleep psychology experts work with you to develop more efficient and effective sleep behaviors, from recalibrating your time in bed (sleep restriction therapy) to learning relaxation techniques to reduce sleep-disrupting stress and anxiety.
At UVM Health, we are dedicated to improving sleep for patients at any age. As with adults, kids can have trouble sleeping, too. We provide specialized pediatric sleep medicine care for children and teens experiencing the full spectrum of sleep disorders, including sleep apnea and insomnia. We also offer cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for children with sleep problems caused by fear of the dark, separation anxiety or nightmares. One of the region’s only full-service pediatric sleep medicine programs, we offer specialized care from highly trained experts. Our team includes fellowship-trained pediatric sleep medicine physicians and pediatrics-trained, board-certified clinical psychologists.
Sleeping well and safely begins early in life. UVM Children’s Hospital has earned national gold-level certification from the nonprofit organization Cribs for Kids, which recognizes our commitment to promoting safe sleep for infants. Teaching parents and guardians of newborns safe sleep practices, we work with you to protect your baby by providing education and information consistent with the highest public health and pediatric medicine guidelines.
