Compassionate Inpatient Care for Your Comfort and Safety

Hospital-based clinicians called “hospitalists” focus on diagnosing and managing serious, life-threatening illnesses of patients needing hospitalization.

At University of Vermont Health, hospitalists expertly manage your inpatient care once you are admitted to the hospital and compassionately care for you throughout your hospital stay — no matter how long or short it is. Our on-site hospitalists specialize in providing hospital care to meet your severe or complex medical needs, with the goal of getting you back home as safely and quickly as possible.

Our hospital medicine service is made up of hospital medicine physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners —all with expertise managing common but serious medical conditions, from heart failure and pneumonia to stroke. We treat uncommon and rare conditions as they arise. Practicing medicine exclusively in an inpatient setting, their deep familiarity with hospital-based care teams, tests and procedures ensures you receive prompt and personalized care.

Why Choose UVM Health?

  • 24/7 in-hospital availability: Our hospital medicine specialists provide around-the-clock care from your care in the emergency department through your hospital stay once admitted. • Expert inpatient care: Our hospitalists are dedicated to accurately diagnosing your medical condition as quickly as possible so you can receive timely treatment and care in our inpatient unit. Their deep familiarity with every specialist and department in the hospital ensures you receive seamless specialty care during your time with us.
  • Communication: Hospitalists stay in contact with your family and outpatient care providers to keep them informed of your progress and health status.

Services We Provide

Inpatient Care

Our hospitalists carefully and continuously evaluate your progress and response to treatment throughout your inpatient stay. The hospital medicine service is available 24/7, making it easy for your primary care provider to contact us about your progress. They work closely with you and your family, and the entire inpatient care management team, to plan discharge dates and needs. Hospitalists provide a detailed summary of your hospital treatment to your primary care provider when you leave the hospital.

Discharge Planning

Ensuring you are medically ready to safely leave the hospital for home or another care facility is among our top priorities. Monitoring your condition and recovery, our hospitalists work closely with your outpatient treatment team when it comes time for your hospital discharge.

Once discharged from our hospitalist service, your care shifts back to your primary care and specialty providers. Contact your primary care provider for refills of medications prescribed by the hospitalist at the time of discharge. If you have any questions or concerns after discharge, you should contact your primary care provider.

Awards & Certifications
