Pediatric Infectious Diseases

Pediatric Infectious Disease at Golisano Children's Hospital

It’s normal for children to catch a minor infection from time to time. But sometimes an infection causes more serious illness, putting children at risk of complications like inflammation and organ damage.

As a parent, you want the very best care to keep your child healthy and safe. At Golisano Children's Hospital at University of Vermont Health, we specialize in infectious diseases — and in children. This expertise sets us apart as some of the only pediatric-trained infectious disease specialists in the region.

Why Choose Golisano Children's Hospital?

Our infectious disease physicians provide comprehensive care for children and adolescents. We offer a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services, including international travel consultations. Trust your child’s care to our skilled, compassionate experts.

As one of the leading pediatric infectious disease programs in the region, we offer:

  • Specialized expertise: We are home to Golisano Children’s Hospital, and our doctors are among the only pediatric-trained infectious disease specialists in the region. Our specialists also consult with state health departments and other government agencies and serve on immunization practice committees to set the standards of care.
  • Access to care: Your child doesn’t need to wait long to see a specialist. We prioritize access to care with in-person appointments, digital health visits and phone consultations as appropriate.
  • Research emphasis: As part of a health system anchored by an academic medical center, our physician-leaders are active researchers, many of whom train the next generation of experts. We are participants in several ongoing global health projects collaborating with researchers in foreign countries.

Pediatric Infectious Disease Services

Our specialists offer a wide array of pediatric infectious disease services, from travel vaccinations to treatment for complex infections. Highlights of our specialized services include:

Diagnostic Consultations

Effective treatment for any infectious disease starts with an accurate diagnosis. We work with multiple specialists across UVM Health to help diagnose complicated and severe infections and immune system deficiencies. Our specialists help your family find answers to get your child the right treatment.

Lyme Disease Diagnosis and Treatment

Children in Vermont and northern New York have a high risk of contracting tick-borne illnesses like Lyme disease. These diseases can cause symptoms that affect your child’s health, behavior and school performance and may be difficult to diagnose. Our specialists have years of experience in evaluating, diagnosing and effectively treating Lyme disease and other tickborne diseases.

Pediatric Travel Clinic

Before traveling abroad, your child may need vaccines or preventive medications to lower their risk of infection. Specialists in our Pediatric Travel Clinic help keep your child safe with pre-travel consultations, vaccine counseling, vaccine administration and medication recommendations. We offer immunizations on a convenient schedule for your family, aiming to minimize your child’s missed school time.
