Honoring Loved Ones with New Outdoor Spaces at The Alice Center

Honoring Loved Ones with New Outdoor Spaces at The Alice Center

New pergolas donated in tribute to cherished family members provide residents and visitors a peaceful place for comfort, connection and reflection.

This year, as The Alice Center celebrates its 10th anniversary, two new pergolas have been added to the grounds — a space for reflection, relaxation and family time, made possible by the generosity of two families who know the value of compassionate care firsthand.

For Dave Werner, the pergola is a tribute to his wife, Susie, who was cared for at The Alice Center from December 2023 until her passing in November 2024. “Susie was always clean, well dressed, and cared for by an excellent staff,” he shared. “It was a no-brainer that I would do something to honor Susie’s life in her last year at The Alice Center as appreciation for the wonderful care she received.” Susie loved being outdoors, and even as Alzheimer’s affected her, she continued walking until her final weeks. Her husband often took her along the sidewalk behind the center, but with no shade, the summer sun made it difficult. The pergola was born out of a desire to create a comfortable outdoor space for others to enjoy, just as Susie had.

Wendy Sue Reville and her family were inspired by the care their mother and nan, June, received over four and a half years at The Alice Center. “We’re so thankful to everyone who looked after her, especially our five favorite caregivers who went above and beyond: Kerry, Courtney, Taylor, Darlene and Lynn,” Wendy Sue said. The family often spent time walking along the beautiful outdoor walkway and enjoying the sunshine after lunch. Noticing there was no shaded area, they decided to give in her memory, so that others could enjoy the outdoors comfortably. “We hope many will utilize the area to enjoy needed relaxation and family time while at The Alice Center, like we did with our mom and nan.”

Together, these gifts commemorate the 10th anniversary by enhancing the center’s beautiful grounds with welcoming pergolas — a lasting tribute to loved ones and the compassionate care provided at The Alice Center.
