What Are Video Visits?

Video visits are secure online appointments between you and your provider, available from the comfort of your home. You can access your appointment using a computer, tablet or smartphone, allowing you and your provider to see, hear and speak to each other in real time. Video visits are private and are not recorded.

The UVM Medical Center has been offering video visits as a convenient, safe and secure care option to our patients for years. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have expanded this offering across both our primary and specialty care practices to meet our patients’ care needs.

Here's How It Works

1. Contact Your Provider's Office

Your care team will help you determine if a video visit is right for your needs. If it is, they will confirm your appointment via email, and include a link to your secure video visit. Find your provider's contact information here.

2. Create Your MyChart Account

MyChart is a personalized patient portal that allows you to stay connected to your healthcare from wherever you are. If you do not already have a MyChart account, you will need to create one prior to your appointment. You can set up your account here. If you already have a MyChart account, please make sure you are able to log in before your visit

3. Log In to the Video Visit

When it's time for your video visit, open the email sent to you by your provider's office on the device of your choice, and click the provided link to join the appointment. We recommend testing Zoom on your device before your appointment; you can join a test meeting on the Zoom website to make sure your system is working.

4. Talk With Your Provider, Privately and Securely

During your video visit, you will be able to see and talk with your provider in real time, so you can discuss your health needs just as you would in an in-person appointment. Your doctor has access to your complete medical record and can electronically order prescriptions and / or medical followup as needed.

Which Departments and Practices Offer Video Visits?

Most departments, from primary care to specialty programs, are equipped with video visit capabilities. Contact your provider’s office to discuss your health needs and let them know you’re interested in a video visit.

Pediatric Video Visits

Our pediatric providers also offer video visits, and can treat injury and illness as well as provide routine care for your child. To find out if a video visit is right for your child, please contact your pediatric primary care office.

Video Visit Instructions

To ensure your video visit goes smoothly, here are a few things you can do in advance to make sure you're set up for your appointment.

1. If you plan to use a smartphone or tablet, please download the free Zoom app. The app can be downloaded through the App Store or Google Play. If using a computer, no download is required - you can access Zoom from your browser.

2. Test Zoom, as well as your internet connection, on your device 24 hours before your appointment. You can join a test meeting on the Zoom website to make sure your system is working. If you are having technical difficulties or questions, please contact us at (802) 846-8266.

3. Find a quiet, private room with no distractions. Try to sit with a light source directed at you, and do not sit with a window behind you. Adjust your camera to eye level.

4. When you're ready to begin your appointment, please open the confirmation email from your provider's office and click "Join Zoom Meeting." If prompted, enter the meeting ID provided in the email invitation.

5. During your appointment, maintain eye contact with your provider and speak clearly, with a normal tone and volume.

Yes. If you do not have access to reliable internet or the necessary technology for a video visit, a telephone visit may be arranged instead. Please let your provider know when making your appointment.

Please note that phone visits may be billed differently than video visits. Check with your provider’s office staff or with your insurance company to find out whether phone visits are covered under your plan.

Video visits are very similar to any other kind of video chat, and are conducted via Zoom – a simple, easy-to-use video conferencing platform than many patients already have experience with. Zoom can be accessed through your browser if you are on a desktop; if you are using a mobile device, the app can be downloaded through the App Store or Google Play.

Coverage depends on your individual insurance carrier. However, most carriers, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, cover video visits. Your provider’s clinical team will be able to help you find out if your visit will be covered.

Your visit is private and confidential. Only those whom you have agreed to let participate in the visit may see and hear it.

No, Vermont law does not allow recordings to be made of patient visits. Also, by law, patients are not allowed to record visits from their end.

Yes. If you have never done a video visit before, and would like assistance, please let your provider’s office know. A member of our patient access services team will reach out to walk you through setting up your devices. You can also test Zoom on your device by joining a test meeting through the Zoom website. Yes, many pediatric appointments can be held via video visit. Please contact your child’s Pediatric Primary Care office to find out if a video visit is appropriate for your child’s needs and to set up an appointment.

Yes. If you or a member of your family need interpreting services, they will be made available to you, with an interpreter participating in your video visit. Be sure to let the scheduler know when making your appointment, and note your language preferences. This also applies to members of our deaf community.

If, after your video visit, your provider determines that you need to be seen in-person, the office staff will work with you to find a convenient time for you to come in.

Yes. We use technology that, by law, must include HIPAA-compliant security methods to protect the privacy and security of your health information. We also recommend that you find a quiet, private place to have your eHealth visit to for additional privacy.

Yes, your family member or caretaker may participate in your video visit if you so choose.
