Residency Curriculum Clinical Rotations
The General Surgery Residency program includes five clinical years and an optional research year between the clinical G2 and G3 years.
Clinical Year One
The first clinical year rotations are on the following surgery services:
- Acute Care Surgery
- Cardiothoracic Surgery
- Emergency Surgical Service
- General Surgery
- Pediatric Surgery
- Plastic Surgery
- Transplant Surgery
- Surgical Intensive Care Unit
- Surgical Oncology
- Vascular Surgery
Clinical Year Two
Rotations in the second year include:
- Acute Care Surgery
- Central Vermont Medical Center- Rural Rotation
- Emergency Surgical Service
- General Surgery
- Pediatric Surgery
- Plastic Surgery
- Surgical Intensive Care Unit
- Surgical Oncology
- Transplant Surgery
- Vascular Surgery
Research Year
A year is spent in Surgical Research between the second and third clinical years.
Clinical Year Three
During the third clinical year the resident gains further experience in:
- Acute Care Surgery
- Endoscopy and Advanced Laparoscopy Surgery
- Emergency Surgical Service
- General Surgery
- Surgical Intensive Care Unit
- Surgical Oncology
- Transplant Surgery
- Vascular Surgery
Clinical Year Four
Residents in their fourth clinical year as chief resident spend:
- 3 Months on Cardiothoracic Surgery
- 3 Months on Emergency Surgical Service
- 3 Months on Pediatric & Plastic Surgery
- 2 Month Central Vermont Medical Center Rural Rotation
- 1 Month on an elective rotation
Clinical Year Five
The final clinical year is devoted to serving as chief resident on three general surgery services:
- General Surgery
- Surgical Oncology/Transplant Surgery
- Acute Care Surgery
Surgery Location
The general surgery residency clinical training occurs at the Medical Center Campus in Burlington, Vermont with some ambulatory surgery experience at the Fanny Allen Campus, three miles to the east. 2nd and 4th year residents spend time at Central Vermont Hosptial which is a 45 minute drive from Burlington. Mileage is reimbursed for travel to CVMC.
