Home Infusion Pharmacy
Home Infusion at UVM Health
If you take medication delivered through a catheter or needle (infusion therapy), you may be able to get this treatment at home. Home infusion pharmacy services at University of Vermont Health provide the medications, equipment and support you need.
With home infusion therapy, there’s no need to take time away from work, family or leisure activities to travel to an infusion center for your treatment. Our certified pharmacy technicians prepare your medication, and we deliver it to your door.

Conditions We Treat
Infusion therapies are medications you take through a needle (injection) or thin tube (catheter). You may need these therapies if you have an infection or illness. Home infusion therapy may be right for you when you’re well enough to go home after hospitalization but still need to continue intravenous medication therapy.
These therapies may include:
- Antibiotics
- Antifungals
- Antivirals
- Hydration
- Pain medication
- Parenteral or enteral nutrition if you have a condition that prevents you from being able to eat
You may use infusion therapies if you have a long-term (chronic) health condition. These therapies may include:
- Immunoglobulin therapies
- Biologic therapies
- Other specialty infusion or injectable therapies
What to Expect
Your home infusion therapy care begins with a referral from your provider. If home infusion is right for you, our team supports you with equipment, medication and training. We offer:
Before you’re discharged from the hospital, a home infusion nurse will visit your room for an in-person teaching session. They will talk with you about what’s involved in home infusion therapy and make sure you feel it’s right for you. They will also provide instruction to a caregiver, family member or friend who can help support you.
If home infusion therapy isn’t a good fit for you, we will help arrange alternative care. We will take as much time as you need to feel comfortable with your medications and the infusion process.
Our team includes a home infusion billing analyst who works with your insurance company to make sure your medications are covered. We handle calls and paperwork so you don’t have to worry about them.
Even though you’ll be doing infusions at home, you’ll have your first dose in an infusion center or other supervised setting. We do this so you’ll feel comfortable and so we can see how you react to your new medication.
We prepare your medication and deliver it regularly so you’re ready for your scheduled infusions. Our team stays in close contact so you’re never without your therapy or supplies when you need them.
We create a customized care plan for you. Our home infusion pharmacist checks your medication before each delivery and assesses the results of any testing you’ve had. Through your shared electronic medical record (EMR), our team stays in close contact with your provider.
Support for Specialty Infusions
If you have a long-term (chronic) health condition and need specialty infusion medication, our team offers additional support. Most specialty medications require a nurse to administer these infusions in your home. We work with your home infusion or home health nurse to make sure that they have the equipment needed to give you your medication.
Health Assistance Program
Our Health Assistance Program (HAP) helps eligible low- and middle-income families get prescription medications at no cost, even if you have insurance.
Advanced Tools for Preparing Medications
Our certified pharmacy technicians prepare your medication through a process called sterile compounding. We follow strict quality standards to make sure we prepare all medications in a safe, sterile environment.
We use advanced technology to store the compounding instructions (templates) for your medication. This technology means we make your medication the same way every time.
