Lab Services for Hospitals and Clinicians

A Resource for Hospitals and Clinicians Pathology and Clinical Laboratory Services

In addition to serving as The University of Vermont Medical Center's laboratory, the department also serves as a reference and consultative service for many hospitals in the North East.

The UVM Medical Center Laboratory is a member of the Northeast Community Laboratory Alliance (NECLA), a regional affiliation comprised of all of the hospitals in Vermont. Through a coordinated delivery system, NECLA is designed to support local and regional health care providers while supporting each hospital members outreach activities without limiting their primary loyalty to their hospital and its alliances. NECLA was formed in 1996 and is partnered with Mayo Medical Laboratories.

Laboratory Support

Operations Support

The performance of millions of tests each year requires constant equipment washing and sterilizing. Three dedicated staff members perform all the tasks necessary to keep the lab testing materials (glassware, equipment, and supplies) fully operational. Along with this important work, the same staff fulfills supply orders for all clients who collect lab samples in their clinics. The staff maintains the inventory of supplies necessary for phlebotomy sites.

Laboratory Outreach

Patient volumes in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine here at UVMMC are split into 3 components, inpatients, outpatients and outreach. In addition to serving our own inpatient and outpatient communities we also act as an outreach reference lab for the private practice offices in Chittenden County and for all of the other hospitals in Vermont, plus some in upstate NY and NH. This presents us with a unique opportunity to offer the patients, who live locally, an integrated inpatient/outpatient record. Test results ordered by a community provider performed in our lab are available to any clinician with access to our Epic EMR. In addition, the results are returned electronically to the community practice. Not only does this provide much needed clinical history it also prevents duplicate testing and reduces the total cost of health care.
As an outreach reference laboratory we are able to offer an extensive menu of routine and esoteric testing, both here at the medical center, and through our partnership with Mayo Clinical Labs. the additional outreach volume allows us to offer testing we would normally need to send out, reducing turn around times and keeing testing local. As an outreach client you can expect:
  • A dedicated outreach specialist for your practice
  • Clinical and Surgical Pathology Consults and Hot Seat
  • Customized sample pickups
  • Collection supplies and centrifuge to maintain sample integrity
  • Electronic interfacing of orders and results for qualifying clients
