A diagnostic mammogram is an x-ray exam done to evaluate a breast problem, such as a lump, nipple discharge or pain. This test may also be recommended if something abnormal was found on your screening mammogram.
A Breast Imaging Center of Excellence
As a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence accredited by the American College of Radiology, The University of Vermont Medical Center provides advanced diagnostic and technical expertise for all breast problems, including mammography, stereotactic biopsy, ultrasound-guided biopsy and breast ultrasound.
If you need follow-up care after your mammogram, you have access to the full range of breast care procedures from an experienced team dedicated to breast health.
What to Expect During a Diagnostic Mammogram
During your diagnostic mammogram, a technologist will take additional images of your breast, to carefully study the area of concern. These images can be enlarged to allow our breast imaging technologist to evaluate a specific area. An ultrasound - which uses high-frequency sound waves to take images of the breast - may be recommended as well. You will receive the results of the exam during your visit and the radiologist will continue to be available to answer any concerns or questions you have.
