The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC) and UVM Larner College of Medicine in Burlington offers an ACGME accredited four-year combined Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Residency Program. The goal of the residency program is to produce well-rounded confident residents prepared for a successful career in pathology, be it in private practice or within an academic setting. To achieve this goal, the program encompasses a blend of academic and practical training in the setting of a rural university health center with a large geographic referral area.
The residents are exposed to a full range of anatomic and clinical pathology specimens and testing; an important combination that fosters strong diagnostic skills. To support the development of professional, independent pathologists, the residents have increasing levels of responsibility commensurate with their level of development throughout their training. The residents learn in an environment supported by frequent one-on-one interactions and individualized mentorship from diverse faculty and experienced hospital and laboratory staff.
Residents’ education is enhanced through comprehensive didactic and educational sessions with access to extensive resources to support their learning. In addition, residents gain experience in quality assurance and regulatory issues by serving as assistant medical directors.
