UVMMC IR Program History
The University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC) has a rich history and proud tradition in Vascular and Interventional Radiology excellence.
Drs. A. Bradley Soule and John P. Tampas, successive transformative Chairs of Radiology at the University of Vermont for over six decades, performed the first angiograms in the late 1950s and early 1960s before recruiting Dr. Edward A. Kubic. Dr. Kubic joined in the late 1960s after his training was completed in Oregon under the tutelage of Dr. Charles Dotter, widely recognized as the “Father of Interventional Radiology.” Drs. Robert Dorwart, Gary Alsofrom, and Bela Ratkovitz all comprised the early group of angiographers between the 1970s and 1980s.
Dr. Kenneth E. Najarian formally trained as an Interventional Radiology Fellow at Brown University and returned to UVMMC in 1988, serving as IR Division Director until 2004. He recruited Dr. Christopher S. Morris, who trained at Massachusetts General Hospital, to join in 1991. Dr. Morris subsequently served as IR Division Director from 2005–2009. Together, Drs. Najarian and Morris built the Division of Interventional Radiology and started the IR Fellowship in 1995, graduating our first IR Fellow — Dr. Adel Al-Ali — in 1996. Dr. Robert D’Agostino, who trained at Boston Medical Center, joined the IR Division in 1996, and subsequently Dr. Anant D. Bhave joined in 2001 after completing training at Northwestern University. Dr. Bhave would go on to serve as IR Division Director from 2009–2022. Drs. Joseph T. Shields and Geoffrey M. Scriver, both alumni of our UVM IR Fellowship, joined the IR Division in 2006 and 2017, respectively.
Dr. Bill S. Majdalany, who trained at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and served as IR Fellowship Program Director at the University of Michigan (2014–2019) and IR Residency Program Director at Emory University (2019–2022), was recruited as IR Division Director in 2022 and established the Integrated IR Residency in 2025. Dr. Joshua A. Kallen, who trained at Johns Hopkins University, joined in 2024, and Dr. Alan Massouh, who trained at the University of Utah, joined in 2025.
At Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital (CVPH – Plattsburgh, NY), now one of our network hospitals, the IR service started as a private practice by a former UVM IR Fellow – Dr. William Pace in 2010. Subsequently, Dr. Julio Lemos another UVM IR Fellow joined him after finishing his training in 2011. Dr. Steve Deso, who trained at Stanford, joined in 2016 and serves as the Site Director of IR. Dr. Joshua Marlow trained at Washington University in St. Louis (Mallinkrodt Institute of Radiology) and joined the practice in 2022 and now serves as the Director of Radiology. In 2023, Dr. John Haines, a UVM IR Alum, joined the practice as well. For many years, IR trainees at UVMMC would rotate at this hospital to gain exposure to the Vascular Lab and Wound Care Clinics which are staffed by the IR service, qualify for Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation (RPVI) as well as to gain more exposure to peripheral arterial disease. In 2024, CVPH IR joined the University of Vermont Health Network and rotations are a part of the curriculum in PGY5 and PGY6.
