The Department of Radiology is committed to bringing advanced imaging technology to the local community and beyond; utilizing innovative translation research to advance clinical care.
The Vermont Breast Cancer Surveillance System (VBCSS) is a research and quality assurance program that collects integrated patient, radiology, pathology, and cancer diagnosis data for all women undergoing breast imaging at radiology facilities in the state of Vermont. Funded continuously by research grants from the National Cancer Institute since 1996, this statewide registry provides longitudinal data to evaluate a wide range of research topics in breast cancer, including prevention, detection, diagnosis, and survivorship. Much of our research focuses the evaluation of new imaging technologies in clinical practice. In addition to our research, we provide quality assurance reports to all breast imaging centers in the state that are used to monitor and improve the effectiveness of breast cancer screening programs in Vermont as we strive for earlier diagnosis and reduction of mortality from breast cancer. The VBCSS is a collaborative effort among researchers in Radiology, Pathology, Surgery, and Biostatistics, and is one of the six core sites of the national Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium (https://www.bcsc-research.org/) funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to conduct research to improve the breast cancer screening process.
Here are some of the radiology faculty who are actively involved with VBCSS performing research and regularly publishing.
