Audiology Services for Adults

Hearing Evaluations

At UVM Health, our certified audiologists evaluate your hearing using a variety of tests, including audiometric testing, to fully assess your hearing loss. A simple procedure, audiometric testing takes place in a soundproof booth where you wear headphones. The test will determine how well you hear different tones and frequencies of sound, such as speech recognition, in each ear.

Hearing Aid Services

You have many choices of hearing aids, but how do you know which will give you the best hearing experience? Our experienced audiology professionals work with you from start to finish and will help you select an aid suited to your needs, budget and lifestyle.

Electroacoustic Assessments of Hearing Aids

New digital technologies continue to improve the functionality of hearing aids sold today. Our experts can help you get the most out of your digital aid through regular electroacoustic testing.

Electroacoustic assessments supplement standard real ear tests with a higher level of analysis, which help your audiologist better adjust your aid to any changes in your hearing.

Protection from Hearing Loss

Our audiology program is dedicated to hearing preservation and conservation at any age. We offer many effective solutions, such as custom-fitted ear plugs, to help reduce the side effects of noise you may be exposed to at work or play. Our team works with anyone interested in protecting their hearing, including musicians, motorcyclists, hunters and construction workers.

Audiology Services for Children

Auditory Brainstem Response Evaluations

There are many reasons other than hearing loss for your baby to not pass a newborn screening. At UVM Health, we offer non-sedated auditory brainstem response exams to better evaluate infants for potential hearing loss.

Safe and painless, this test is performed by a qualified audiologist and looks at how your baby’s hearing nerves and brain are responding to sound. Our audiology program was the first in Vermont to initiate this important testing without using sedation medication, leading to earlier diagnoses and prevention of hearing loss in children as young as three months.

Child-Centered Hearing Evaluations

Your little ones are in the best child-friendly hands. For young children, our experienced pediatric audiologists make hearing tests fun by using visual reinforcement audiometry (VRA) technology.

When your child correctly looks in the direction of the sound, our hearing professional provides a visual reward: a few seconds of an entertaining video on a special VRA screen. For play audiometry testing, we use toys and games to keep your child engaged and motivated.

Newborn Screening

Hearing care starts early at UVM Health. Most babies born at our hospitals undergo their first hearing screening when they are just a few hours old. Performing complimentary screening, our dedicated universal newborn screening technicians screen about 2,500 babies a year using painless otoacoustic emissions screening.

Choice of Hearing Aids

We want to take the stigma and potential embarrassment away from using hearing aids. Our program offers your child or teenager a full range of colorful and unique aids that for many become a trendy fashion accessory.

Community Partnerships

For school-aged children, our audiologists work closely with school consultants for the deaf and hard of hearing. Together, we ensure children in our local communities receive the resources and support that they need.
